AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

afropunk 2013

I just feel like Afro-Punk is another Hot Topic genera of music made. Clothing and accessories to sell and bullshit music to make it all have "purpose".
I just don't get why blacks think they deserve their own section of punk if their just ripping off other bands.
I've researched and listened to these crap bands, and all I hear is sampled versions of the 70's and 80's

Then to pull in truly original and ground breaking bands like Pure Hell and Bad Brains and call it Afro-Punk. When they themselves never thought of themselves more than good punk music and we jut happen to be black.

Emeniem didn't go into the business calling his music Cracker-Rap (though that woulda be funny), so I want to know, what makes you so special, how do you feel you're entitled to put the segregation wedge in punk music? Damned racists.

This website is not for the creation of a subcategory/segregation of punk solely for blacks. It's for those of the black persuasion who happen to like music such a punk, psychedelic, etc rather than what the media portrays the average african americans repertoire to contain to converse or shares ideas, etc. This site states nowhere that no other race besides blacks are able to join or add their music and clothing lines. EVERYONE is welcome. Just like you said Pure Hell and Bad Brains never saw the lines of color, they just wanted to make good music. Many people on this website have this mindset. You're fairly new. Interact and you'll see. Good day to you.

... But why call it Afro-Punk?
Why not just call is PunkWorld.com? Black persuasion? I've been listening to these modern Afro-"Punk" bands... There is nothing new nor original to them.
It's just proving that image sells the music, like Suicide Silence in Deathcore.

And you didn't answer my question so I'll reiterate:

What makes you so special? Just because you're black and you like punk?
What makes Afro-Punk different from all punk music?

Dude in the natzi shirt if I ever see you in the streets I will make it my mission to knock you out. And in my opinion its called "AFRO" punk because back in the day whites didn't really accept blacks in the rebellious ways of punk at first. So you we made it our own in an unofficial way.
I smell a troll.

I've completely answered your question. You just have your head stuck so far up you ass you don't see.
Why join the site? You're confused. GOOD DAY.

I would like you to see any documentary with bands like "Bad Brains" before say things like "When they themselves never thought of themselves more than good punk music and we jut happen to be black." Being that they have said much of their obscurity in the punk/rock world were due to their being black.

Also being that Rock and every other form of "western"music has black influence. I think it important that we as black try to hold on to all forms of our music. Seeing media and other sources(like yourself) like to obscure us from our own music. Then there's the other fact. If i were to go to any punk or any other sub culture site, you could probably predict the reception. Also i would like to here your definition of racist.

I welcome the challenge.
I live in Las Vegas, Nevada. I frequent a bar called the Double Down Saloon wearing that very shirt.

Anytime any day, boy.

Fuck off, Yoshi Cooper. If you knew in depth about the history of how Blacks came here and have been treated and how hard people before us had to work and been denied rights jobs etc because of being born Black and the history of all the music we've brought to the world and the personal experiences of how folks in my generation and others got treated like shit cause we didn't fit into the mainstream of later Black culture cause we were into punk and hard rock and other shit (HR of Bad Brains and his band members could tell you about too I bet.,), then you might appreciate why James Spooner wanted to tell the story of Black punks and bands here in the US, and why he got some other Black folks to start this online site over 7 years ago, and why that opened it up to Black folks into anything out of the mainstream Black stereotypes, and it's just grown from there. Maybe it's too Corporate and Slick for some....but I still got great respect for how and why we are here. We all giving props to our own out there creative unique Black folks.

Even if we got a Black president, we still have a need to support each other in this way. If you can't respect that, then fuck off. Ain't nothing abusive or racist in general in uplifting each other. Can't speak for everybody but I think most of us here don't need to put down others to feel better themselves. Rock on, Bow down.!

Rosenda,

You said it far better than I probably could.

Yoshi, you don't have to listen to the music, you don't have to come to this site, you don't have to give a frak about why we call what we call what.  Take a hike son.

I'm an Afro-Punk from the original site, and I've been into Punk music since probably before yer daddy's nuts dropped, so I can totally say that this site and OUR scene is a validation that some BLACK kid who is living in the middle of nowhere (or somewhere) feeling completely out of the Black American norm or mainstream can feel like there is a place they can belong and that there are people just like them.

I think you take the name too literally. I think Afro-Punk is just a catchy descriptive name so that people get an idea what the website portrays. I don't think the site is trying to (intentionally) put a wedge in anything.

I noticed that you're from Las Vegas. So am I. I don't know about you but for a while I felt like a fish outta water for a while being a black gothic chick. Luckily I was quickly accepted. Sadly this isn't the case for many of the other members which is why I believe this is one of the reasons the website was created.

I don't believe that I'm special over anyone. And I do agree that some members here take racial line too seriously but I don't think that's the overall vibe here. I'm just relieved that that there is a place that people of like minds and backgrounds can come together and relate. Though I fully believe in a "colorblind" lifestyle, it would be naive to think that everyone will feel the same way. Again luckily we live in a city that is alternative almost in every way possible that we can be a bit more open than most.

IDK just my thoughts...

"Then to pull in truly original and ground breaking bands like Pure Hell and Bad Brains and call it Afro-Punk. When they themselves never thought of themselves more than good punk music and we jut happen to be black. "

Funny, didn't stop Pure Hell and Bad Brains from playing at Afropunk shows.

You sir are a tool. "I'll kick your ass", for all I know yeah you might be able to kick my ass. But that doesn't negate the fact you're a tool. I mean, god damn you're wearing a shirt with a swastika on it. I'm sorry, but the whole "I'm a token <insert ethnicity here> dude who goes out of his way to seem less<insert ethnicity here>than so alt white people will think I'm cool is lame is fuck.

Now you really wanna be bad ass wear a shirt with this image on it, in that same club...and then come back and talk shit.

wow ^^^^ I had that pic on my Myspace back in 2006......memories

nice jack Ira.
