Wondering for years: Who is the greatest AMERICAN rock band ever?

I haven't really gotten a straight answer over the years.
we all know 'bout the great British bands in history: Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin, Who, Clash, AC/DC, Queen, ect but who is the greatest AMERICAN band

Where is the love for Dave Mathews Band? They always deliver good music every time.
BlackJeff, I agree except Guns n Roses as they really on had one all-around solid album during their peak period.
Hmm...What about The Doors or Jefferson Airplane. I read somewhere that at the time, the late 60's, Jefferson Airplane was considered the best band.

I love Talking Heads, probably my favorite band, but I don't know if they've got that kind of mass appeal...

As far as influence goes, yeah, I'd have to say the Velvet Underground. They went in so many directions and influenced so many subgenres, even though hardly anybody liked them at the time.

Depends on what day you ask me that question.

Sparks
Cheap Trick
Lynrd Skynrd
Aerosmith

That's off the top of my head. Sparks' early stuff from mid 70's through early 80's was awesome.
I still love their last two albums but I would not really all their sound strictly rock anymore.

I was JUST about to say Lynrd Skynrd. ...they made southern rock GLOBAL.

The Ramones for influencing bands across the world, across genres.
I just found an article on line that said, Chicago was 2nd and The Beach Boys were the most succesful American Rock bands in the States. Maybe. Perhaps. Could be. Ya gotta sale some records for crediability ya know. I guess.

Ah a true dark horse!
To me, the Beach Boys transcend rock music because the composition was so good and the music really was hypnotic. They were the only domestic treat to the Beatles, often being head to head with them.
Chicago ended horribly. Strong start, terrible finish.
I love coming here cause looking at the Rock Band videogame graphic makes me feel nostalgic of when I got to play that game everyday.
"rock" is kinda broad...different genres got different purposes so that makes it hard to say who's the best. who's the best at loud & powerful ain't the best technical sonic craftsmanship-wise & usually vise-versa

one of the best would be The Plasmatics for me...but I put a lot on live shows, some people don't. I think for the total package Plasmatics, period

the whole idea of a rock n' roll band was embodied by that 1 band...you can't be more rock n' roll w/ your actions as a band, unless you wanna live most of your life locked up. I can't believe to this day, they still relatively obscure, even w/ all the mainstream coverage
