... the other Black experience

Prodouced by SJP a Bravo show goes out to find artist to compete.

The prize is a show at the Brooklyn Museum.

The breakout for me is this Brotha named Abdi, he's kind of a nerdy dude, but his work is awesome.

HE DID IT!!!! I CAN'T BELIEVE IT! HE ACTUALLY DID IT!!!! WOW! He made Dave LaChapelle cry, TWICE!

GO ABDI!!!
Ya know its funny because I was saying to myself (@ the beginning of the competition) that Abdi is gonna be the last of the two remaining artists on the finale.
A few weeks ago, I thought he was done. But, wow.......... dude came back. and he went HARD!
He's so humble, as well. Thats what I like about him. He shows humility & respect. He's not cocky and arrogant.
I'm soooooooooo happy for him.

I need to go to the Brooklyn Museum and look at his work.
*side note* LaChapelle looks like he's had some cosmetic work done.
Anyway,... I don't agree with that older White judge that said Abdi's art is too melodramatic. Yeah, he does have a very precision-based way of drawing/painting,... but as far as narrative/content goes, its EMOTIONAL. Thats how it should be. Make you FEEL something. Some people say that "art doesn't have to say anything". I'm okay with that. But, don't ostricize an artist who DOES want to say something.

yo, Top Chef.
KENNY got ELIMINATED!!!!!!
Bloody fucking hell.
Are you shocked? Because I am.
He was a better executive chef than that other guy, despite his cheese dishes not being up to par.
I still feel like he had something else to offer.
No way he deserved to go home. There are about 2 or 3 other chefs that should've went home instead.
Okay,... now I'm rooting for Tiffany or Kevin.
The whole thing felt kinda anti-climatic to me; I missed the first twenty minutes, though, so I didn’t get to see the construction of the individual pieces in their displays.

And yeah, that was a hell of an awkward walk after they told Miles he wasn’t the winner. =P
Overall, his pieces just looked like successful experiments to me, which is fine on its own. Conceptually, though, it bored me and didn’t seem to have any cohesiveness.

I don’t think the photographs of the man in the store would’ve meant anything if the guy hadn’t died. I don’t know if David LaChapelle was just turning things up a notch for the camera, but I wasn’t nearly as touched as he seemed to be.

I didn’t really find anything to not like about Peregrine’s piece, but it didn’t do anything for me. Presentation-wise, it was great to look at, but my fascination stopped there. She annoyed me when she would make the “’bout to cry” face.

I honestly thought Peregrine would win, but I’m glad Abdi won, given his competition. Like one of the judges said, I do think the drama-factor was somewhat heavy-handed here and there, but maybe that “accessibility” is what the other two lacked. I really wish I could’ve seen the two sculptures in person … seemed like something was lost in translation to me, over the telly screen. Couldn’t quite make out the texture …

Like you said, Golem, I certainly don’t mind when an artist does want to say something, instead of going the “abstract” Rorschach route. Not entirely sure what my problem is with the perceived melodrama in Abdi’s work, though. Like that challenge that he really bombed a few weeks ago, I found some of his messages to be too tropeish to take seriously. I can understand a group of white people standing around and cooing over how “deep” his message is, even if they don’t get it. But to me, nothing resonated. I was thinking, “Help me see something beyond my own (race-based) experience; this is old hat.”

Top Chef:

I didn’t want to see Tiffany lose her steam, but at least she’s still around. By the time the service was over, I expected Kenny to go home. He had me convinced before with all his talk, but seems like he lost his touch early on. Ready to see Alex go; it was like he was getting off on being a dick to the serving staff.
I was like NOOOOOOOOOO when they said Kenny pack your knives. I can't understand why ALEX is still there. Yeah Im Team Kevin and Team Tiffany for sure.
I caught the last episodes in repeats. Abdi probably in my mindjust edged out Peregine's work. Her overpresentation at the exhibit may have sunk her but I liked the pardox of cute wax figures and carnival atmosphere coutered with the vomiting girls pictures. Abdi seemed to lean too heavy on the 'depth' and melahcholy of his work. Both were still good. OCD guy was good and photo girl was decent too but not up there with Abdi & Peregine.
I have to call out the Bravo & the producers of this show for stea--, uh, unfairly adapting from my friend "X"'s concept. Of course many folks could have submitted show ideas for an "reality show art contest, Survivor-style", but my understanding is that that there are too many similarities to "X"'s original concept from his treatment submitted some time back.

Again this is the business. If this hadn't happened to me apparently twice I would chalk it up as bad luck and coincidence. Regardless: creative people please copywrite, register, patent, etc. any ideas you deem marketable before showing them to anyone (especially producers and studios) because somebody else probably thinks they're marketable too, dig me? Protect your future credits and ca$h.
