There's always stories on how Black communities oppose gay marriage, but they're ignoring the existence and opinions of Black people who are gay and who may need access to the benefits attached to being married, and there are benefits, including economic ones.
I'm not big on marriage, and I don't understand why straight people are always talking about how sacred the institution of marriage is. I personally have no desire to get married even though I could see myself in a long term relationship with someone who I also lived with. But when it comes to equal rights, just like yr saying Bryan, gay couples in committed unions should have the same rights as straight couples do. You should be able to have your spouse/partner/whatever share your insurance. You should be able to decide what happens to your partner in terms of medical care if they can't decide for themselves. Gay people who are in married-type relationships should definitely have all of the same rights as straight people who are in the same kind of relationships, and if certain gay people want access to that "sacred institution" then they should have it. To me, being part of a costly formal ceremony like a wedding has absolutely no appeal. Who wants to kiss their girlfriend in front of all their friends and family? Ew, embarrassing. But now that I'm thinking about it, I guess you can get married without having a wedding...
Also these two Black girls I know in Toronto are getting married soon! Congratulations Leah & Kyisha!

Permalink Reply by guitargrrrl76 on February 23, 2009 at 11:13pm as long as i pay the same taxes as people who are legally able to get married i want the same rights. if and when i want to marry a woman i will do whatever i need to do to make it so. civil unions, to me, are a nice step in the right direction in the context of the time period they came into fruition (as well as domestic partnerships) but i feel like it's 2009 and people need to chill the fuck out.
i think if i can't get married, i shouldn't have to pay taxes.
