AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

How old were you when you discovered you were into Hip Hop as well as Rock music?

I myself am going to say I was about 11 or 12 when I discovered I was really into hard rock music, then I started watching YO mtv raps and I was hooked on both since then. Around 15 is when I discovered reggae through listening to Bad Brains. I think it all shaped me into who am right now.

I was named after a rolling stones song, and my parents Rasta movement...Angie'Leonie. So been into both from day dot.

I went to a lot of gigs in my early years (3-8yrs). Living in the UK (London) the mixture was crazy, so I listend to everything and only made a seperate distingsion in my teens. you know to be with the "main"group, I had a peer moment of New jack swingness ;-(
Let me quote Lupe "I used to hate hiphop". I don't know why but until 16 I was definitely not a hip-hop fan. But its mostly because the hip hop I was used to hearing came from the radio. Later on in high school someone gave me a copy of Jayz's blueprint and Ludacris's chicken and beer. Although both artists have very radio friendly singles, the albums are straight "you better know how to read to understand this" stuff haha Anyway, those two albums changed my world. I went back and listened to every Jay album. Then the black album came out and Kanye's college dropout came out shortly after that...never looked back.

Speaking of Jayz Heres J's new track with rick ross Free mason.

I was 10 years old when I 1st heard "Rapper's Delight" Spoonie G and Kurtis Blow's "Christmas Rap".I discovered rock music at the age of 6,I went to a white camp and the Counselors were in their teens they would play the Beatles and Boston, etc. My friend that lived downstairs from me listened to KISS.I remember the 1st song of their's that stood out was "Rock n Roll All night".When I was 11 that's when I got into PUNK,Devo,The Clash,Ramones,Blondie, the Knack etc.I was going to a all Black Private school in Jamaica,Queens at the time,I felt like I didn't belong or just didn't fit in there at all, they always called me Whiteboy not because of that, hell nobody really knew I liked that music,it was because of the complexion of my skin.So Punk Rock was conforting to me,but I'm a Hip Hop Junkie!
