He took a deep breath, inhaling the odor of forest wood and open air. Of course he ownded the land for a couple of miles around him. It was a crazy notion to him to think one could claim ownership of a tree, a blade of grass or the insects that cling to or feed off it but the place had been for sale so he gladly played along. He told himself that he was buying a slave and setting him free. Owning land might not have meant much to him philosophically but legally, it became yet another way to keep the world at bay.
He laughed quietly to himself as he looked up at the blue dky, now with more steaks of red from the sinking sun. The only way anyone can get at me is through airstrike he joked. It was too bad he couldn't buy air space, he thought as he continued to scan the sky, if I could I'd stop all fly-bys as well. The idea amused him and made him continue with the line of thought_ I'd have to install some antiaircraft guns to bring down the occasional hard head, there was always some idiot who'd think that the rules didn't apply to him.
Yep, Thomas considered, if I wasn't able to get away from the world when I need to, I'd probably be a serial killer by now.
He laughed outloud at the thought as he continued watching the sky, as if daring a plane to appear overhead. Then, without the slightest warning, all the amusement was snatched away from him. In less than half a second he went from appreicating a dream-come-true, to feeling like he was fast asleep and in the middle of a dream. In the sky, several hundred feet in the air and dropping fast was a flying saucer_ a UFO.
"What the hell?" He heard himself say as he jumped to his feet and continued to watch the object. It was falling fast but it wasn't a straight drop. It was moving erratically as it headed for the Earth but coming down as if attempting a crash landing. Thomas had no idea why he would think this is what was happening and yet, as he continued to watch what he was clearly able to identify as a round flying disk as it soared over his house and headed for the woods beyond it, showed no signs of slowing it's speed or attempts to pull up.
Within seconds the ship disappeared from sight beyond the tree line and an instant more and a muffled sound of wood splitting was heard followed by a flash of the brightest, strangest blue-white light Thomas Addison had ever seen. Then came the smoke_ dark blue somke in a thin column rising into the sky above the near distant tree line.
He stood at the wall of his balcony watching the blue smoke rising above the forest. The crash site was only a few miles away. Thomas glanced at the lowering sun and noted that very soon it would be dark and if he planned on doing what he was now thinking , he had better get moving. He ran back into the house to fnd the keys to his Jeep. It wasn't every day that a Roswell New Mexico dropped in one's front yard.
