AFROPUNK

... the other Black experience

Please Describe How You are 'Awkward'. I am 6'1' Black woman who preferred books to sports.

Also, I preferred rock to soul.  I am now married to an awesomely cool white dude who loves my taste in music. And, I'm over 40 and into Arcade Fire; Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs; TV on the Radio.......How 'bout you?

I am very clumsy and am always always bumping into and tripping over things. Last year, I tripped walking down some stairs in front of a room full of people. It was embarrassing. The good news is that I'm so used to it that I got right back up and kept walking. I've never watched an episode of Real Housewives of anything (not a fan of reality TV as a whole) and spend my nights watching shows like Sherlock, Arrow, New Girl, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Sleepy Hollow. I still watch cartoons and recently got back into comic books. My netflix queue is full of documentaries, indie films, quirky comedies, and classic movies. I don't listen to a lot of mainstream artists so I'm constantly lost when listening to the radio or at a club. I've been described as a hippie of sorts. Whenever someone at work is sick, I always have a suggestion of some kind of oil, cream, or home remedy to cure it. I hate going to the mall, but will spend ALL my money at a used bookstore, farmer's market, flea market, yard sale, or thrift shop.

I think that's enough :-)

We have quite a lot in common. I don't watch much T.V., but I love the new Sherlock, And Benedict C. is awesome in the new 'Star Trek.'  Love used bookstores and thrift stores, farmers markets and yard sales....hmm.  A few of my fav films are Donnie Darko, Eternal Sunshine, Igby Goes Down, Jackie Brown (Pam!)  I don't trip and fall as much as I used to, but I tend to bump into things and knock them over.  Love documentaries. Neil DeGrasse Tyson is  a rocket scientist sex symbol. Well, I could go on but...

I relate to this so much. I'm 5'11 - 6 ft female who can be awkwardly quiet one minute then extremely outspoken the next. People often tell me they can't read me because I don't really fit into a particular "box". Extroversion to Intoversion in a split second which is why none of my friends are like me or similar to the other. A true ambivert to say the least. I love quiet little used bookstores, comic book stores, plus I enjoy time alone and especially love thrift stores. However another day I'll be the complete opposite of all this once the mood takes me, painting the town red without a second thought. I bump into things as well lol. I adore documentaries, witty comedy sitcoms like New Girl, Parks and Rec, 30 Rock, The Office... then onto action and cartoons (was obsessed with DBZ for quite some time) However even though I'm an Introvert I love getting lost in crowds, meeting new people I can relate to and live concerts I guess because I'm a city girl (NYC!! :)) Yet I always have to observe my surroundings before I jump into anything...even at the club. Plus I'm a tech geek! :p

I'm a Leo so I can definitely relate to the introversion to extroversion thing. I sometimes love meeting new people and being the center of attention. Afterwards, I just wanna fade quietly into the background.

YEEESSSS to Benedict Cumberbatch and Neil DeGrasse Tyson!

Pam Grier follows me on Twitter. I almost DIED! Doubt if she pays attention to my tweets, but that's cool with me!

My brand of awkwardness is most definitely of the extroverted kind, but I often ask myself if it's by choice. After all, there are moments that I wished I was more open. Instead of being too open, I often keep to self. My attempts to be open are often stuffed with humor, entrances...just a need to be more interesting as well as honest. But if I am too honest, it's a lot like I'm a crazy type. The funny part is that I'm not as embarrassed for myself as I am about other people. I spend myself wishing that people were more open and honest about who they truly are, if it meant that it won't really paint a negative light. You know?

Also, trying to overcome a sense of awkwardness is my goal, if I want anything to do with music. To this day, it had been awhile since anyone had heard my stuff. I'm not a huge promoter of my stuff, and I mostly speak when spoken to. Also, the big reason I'm not making music as much as I used to is because I'm not convinced people want to hear what I have to say. I actually switch back and forth between those feelings. One moment I know what people want to hear topic-wise, the next day I wonder if they even want to hear it from me.

Another way I am awkward is that I'm a pretty honest guy to a fault. Anytime it seems like I am about to hurt someone's feelings, I only do it when necessary. Any other time, I'd rather stay silent.

Thanks to Nicole, Lighting P. and Goellenaj for your great comments. I am definitely an introvert myself. How about musical tastes?  I was drawn to Afro-Punk because I was accused of liking "white" music. Anyone have a similar experience?

Most definitely. Well, really, I never made a stink about it. The one who worried tge most about it was my mom. Everyone else shrugged it off. My taste ranged from alternative to chill to rock to electronica. I liked hip-hop, but not that much.

The last time soneone really said shit was a white person thinking I was being someone I wasn't,  when I cared less about image and more on the music.

That was when I was younger, thiugh. Now, no one really cared much.
