I really like to see black getting into something other than Christianity or Islam. HOWEVER, I do have a question. Why are black people getting into Celtic and Wiccan beliefs? I'm not trying to sound like an asshole but........Is that not a European belief system? I mean if you find peace, wisdom and truth in it, then by all means. It just doesn't make much sense to me to go from one european religion to another. Given, One was forced onto our people. Just a question.

I appreciate the fact that there is a group like this that discuss Paganism in its raw form. I am new to Paganism but my focus is on the Divine energy of the Ancient Egyptian Goddesses. I look forward to learning from you all as I cultivate my Truth. Be Well. Six

Can't really consider myself a pagan, but I am very aware of the spirit world and I am particularly inspired and drawn to the belief systems of Yoruba and other faiths that are rooted in Africa. It's great to see this conversation being had on afropunk.com. Peace

I just corrected the word "Atheist" from "Athiest" >.< I can't believe I let the misspelling go on for so long!

a black pagan introduced me into the craft and i never looked back. i have met one other black pagan but i am pretty sure she was into some dark shit and had deep seeded personal issues.
other than that whenever i go to gatherings i am usually the only black pagan. it would be comforting to know that i am not the only one. so that it not such a big deal. because you know it is. soon as you enter a room with a bunch of whites and your the only non-white you stick out like a sore thumb and people are reluctant to talk to you for fear of having nothing in common. or maybe thats the way it is in the south where i live.
you would think ...oh pagans they will accept me. but we are all human at the end of the day and were all brought up a certain way.

Although I am no longer Pagan, I practiced Paganism for 7+ years of my life and it's awesome to see other Black Pagans. I met a handful at an all girl Catholic High School I attended for a year back in 1999-2000. I was a solitary eclectic Witch, just did my own thing. Me and a few other girls tried to start a coven of sorts, but alas high school was difficult enough for us.

My senior year of high school in 2002-2003 I started taking classes and doing group activities at the local Metaphysical Shop in Detroit. My teacher was a black woman, and there were many black people in our classes of all ages. That was a great experience. Good to see there's a space here to share your beliefs.

It's also amazing to see how things have changed even since then. It seems that Wicca and Paganism is a lot more "mainstream" and accepted. There was a time in high school when I revealed to my "friends" (at my other, predominately black school) my beliefs, and they all left the table where we were sitting and called me a Devil worshiper. Something similar happened in middle school, but it wasn't as dramatic. Today, I think kids are more familiar with it and therefore more accepting.

What kinds of experiences did/do you guys have? Being black, "alternative", and Pagan..to top that off!

If you would like to know more about particular parts of Paganism, start a discussion. I think it will dredge a response or two.
