Who Are Your Favorite Directors?

Some of my favorites are:

- Jean-Pierre Jeunet (a self- taught director) who directed Delicatessen & The City of the Lost Children)

- Allison Anders (former welfare mother who directed Mi Vida Loca)

- Stanley Kubrick (talented control freak who directed The Shining, A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon and other great films. He also loved chess like me)

- Roman Polanski (His first feature Knife in the Water is an amazing study of how to tell a great story with very little)

Spike Lee--- storytelling, style, production, efficiency & quality of work is incomparble.

Adrian Lyne--- the manner that he creates an environment is compelling: Fame, Shoot the Moon, Pink Floyd The Wall, Birdy, Unfaithful, Flashdance etc. he does diffeent things but his worlds are self-contained and wholeheartedly believable.

Mira Nair--- Her subjects, narratives & colors are amazing. Salaam Bombay, Mississippi Masala, Kama Sutra, Monsoon Weddding, etc are my favs.

Mario Van Peebles--- Severely underrated helmer of great, fast-paced pieces that isn't scared to say 'fuck the cracker-run system' with some Hollywood shine on it. New Jack City, Panther, Posse, Baadassss! (probably the best feature film on filmmaking ever made; if you're not inspired to shoot after seeing what Melvin dealt with than you ain't alive).

Bill Duke--- Another low-profile master of the craft. Deep Cover, A Rage In Harlem, Hoodlum, etc. Also like Mario and Melvin, isn't scared to blast an evil cracker off the screen and have the Black lead survive and be the hero instead of some clown or punk like in most major Hollywood releases.

Hype Williams--- The way he completely turned out music video with his fishbowl angles and faded colors brought a whole new level of surrealism to the game. He defined the 90's with clips for Busta Rhymes, Missy, BIG, Puffy, TLC, Nas, LL, Wu Tang, etc. The much maligned Belly actually brought a lot of new techniques that broke ground in the field.

Russell Mulcahy--- Early pioneer in music video who shot many artistic clips for the likes of Duran Duran and the first Highlander film.

Little X--- Protege of Hype who brought stunning visuals for the likes of Kelis, Neptunes, Beenie Man, Sean Paul, Mystikal, etc.

Paul Hunter--- Shot The Dope Show video for Marilyn Manson along with some others I can't recall now, but his work is very defined.

Floria Sigismondi--- The go to director for that dark, gothic look. Done work for Interpol, Christina Aguilera, Manson, White Stripes, and other videos with that brooding, evil look.
Part II: BUMP! The Sequel

Bob Fosse --- The legendary choregrapher (original Chicago, Sweet Charity, etc.) created some of the most intense and stirring films I've seen. Cabaret, Lenny, Star 80, All That Jazz all had a frighteningly personal feel to them unlike anything ever viewed.

Charles Burnett --- Killer of Sheep showed a type of filmmaking that would be imitated long after it's first screenings.

Melvin Van Peebles --- Never has so much been done with so little. Sweetback and Watermelon Man are aren't simply radical films but drastic shifts in how you can adress racial issues with a sense of humor also.

Don Letts --- Iconic Rasta director, DJ & musician who shot all of The Clash's videos along with others by Musical Youth, The Prentenders, PiL, Big Audio Dynamite (of which he was a member), The Gap Band, The Jungle Brothers and many tothers. Shot the first documentary on the UK punk movement Punk Rock: The Movie as well as Dancehall Queen, Sun Ra: Brother From Another Planet, Gil Scott Heron: The Revolution Will Not Be Televised, The Clash On Broadway, Punk;Attitude plus many more. Bro is freakin' amazing.
You've all named a few good ones already...

Spike Jonze
Ang Lee
Wong Kar Wai
Makoto Suzuki
Akira Kurosawa
Chinatown was good...but a little strange. I love strange.
Great List! Love it.
