hey folx,

A new year equals more opportunities to connect outside of the virtual realm.  Anyone interested in some afro punk get togethers.  Let's scheme!

In the meantime, I'm djaying this MAD event.  Check it out!

On Sunday February 19, 2012 (President's Day Weekend) we a go do this propa!

SWENKA! is a new celebrating the past, gets down with the present, and visualizes the future of African dance riddims, beats, and culture.

All across the diaspora, the fires of innovation and creativity in music continue to burn. Today we just fuel the flames with laptops, flash drives, smartphones, Soundcloud, Youtube, and international flights between Europe, the US, Lagos, Accra, Freetown, JoBerg, Capetown, Luanda and more destinations.

Our DJs for the inaugural session are:

Underdog (Lunchbox Theory, BBC Radio)
Mothershiester (Anthology of Booty, Africa Is Not A Country)
Brian Senyo (Senyomusic.com, The KirkOut)

We’ll be cranking the sounds Afrobeat, Soukous, Hip Life, Naija, Afro house, Kwaito, Coupe Decale, Kuduro, Afropop, UK Funky, it’s free to get in and it's going on down at The Wonderland Ballroom, 1101 Kenyon Street NW, Washington DC.
Come out, wear your wax print, beads, wave your flags, and get #Swenka!

The name Swenka! is based on and takes inspiration from the Swenkas from South Africa, which are men who dress up and compete to showcase their style, class, self respect for themselves and their community. There is an amazing documentary on the Swenkas that you should absolutely see. Read more about them here.

Friday 12/2: Africa is Not A Country

djs mothershiester and bent invite you to:

The 2nd Happy Hour installment of Africa is Not a Country features a special performance by Nettle. Led by DJ /rupture, this long distance inter-continental project blends electronic beats, North African folksongs and percussion with avant garde noise.

We'll be celebrating the release of group's new record -- El Resplandor: The Shining in Dubai. "For this album, Nettle imagined a remake of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining set in a luxury hotel in Dubai, U.A.E. El Resplandor: The Shining In Dubai is their soundtrack for that nonexistent film."

"Nettle's work foregrounds issues of friction, translation, and displacement as necessary counter-narratives to the standard paradigms of 'cross-cultural exchange' and metaphors of mixing or hybridity."

DJ sets by Dc's own bent and mothershiester through the night will feature Rock, Ska, and Punk anthems from Mozambique, South Africa, Kenya, and Nigeria. Jazz arrangements from Madagascar and Ghana. Soukous jams and Chaabi gems. Plus a glut of "pirated" Kenyan Pop mp3s that dj bent found while idly cruising the information superhighway.

FREE!
Time: Nettle plays at 9pm!
Copies of El Resplandor: The Shining in Dubai will be for sale

Drink specials: $3 beers, $5 wine & rail drinks, delicious $5 appetizers
Plus: hooka/sheesha for enjoyment on the veranda
At: this brand new North African spot – Marrakech Lounge.

Africa is Not a Country is an anti-colonial musical journey, using the dancefloor/barstool to deconstruct the idea of “African music” as we rock out from Jo-burg to Cairo, from Dakar to Nairobi, with a quick lap around the islands.

What's Good Kids? This weekend promises to be chock full of awesomeness beginning with the Maloof Money Cup at RFK. Yes they've turned a portion of RFK into a World Class skating facility for the event and beyond.
Then tomorrow evening your allies @ Alloyed Inc. are hosting the official Maloof Skate Cup after party featuring: skate punk legends McRad from Philly , DC's ghetto metal originators Throwdown Syndicate and surf garagers Thee Lexington Arrows outta Baltimore.

Enjoy the look weekend and have fun... represent!
