Afro-punk

I've been a vegan/strict vegetarian for almost a year now.I think I have heard this and different variations of it so many times. It tops my list of ignorant things i have been accost with when someone comes to the realization that I'm a vegan.
Whats most hurtful is when its from people who I think are friends or family members .As if i when i chose to discontinue using and consuming animal products i abondoned my ethinic background.Which is ludicrous to assume.
OR when its other people of color, that pains me the most and it makes me sick at the same time.As if we are limited to only eat certain foods, listen to certain music, dress a certain way ,believe certain things ,to conform to stereotypes and not be true to ourselves etc.
I know someone has to feel me on this one...

I completely relate. It's incredibly uncomfortable when I'm around extended family members who don't know that I'm vegan and are completely shocked if I turn down some of their homemade chicken or any other meats/animal products... its even MORE annoying when they see me a second time at some other family event and immediately say to another person "don't offer her anything, she is trying to stay skinny". Uhhh not true, comments like that are unnecessary and stupid.

Kentucky Fried Horror. lmao. Just watch the video about McMurder, and you wont want to have chicken again. there's plenty of mock meat alternatives out there. Dont kill inocent animals.

I totally agree. Its sad to say but the black community is so set in its ways thats its hard for a lot of people to conceptualize any type of derivation. I used to get SOO many snide remarks about how i was loosing my "blackness", and how I was SOO "weird". I've never been one to sway from an ideal because of popular opinion but at the same time I hated having to hear comments like that whenever I went out to eat or just ate period. I find its a lot easier to state your case on why you decided to stop eating not only chicken but meat in general instead of letting people bother you. They may not agree, but they at least learn to respect it and lay off the corny jokes.

Yeah gurl I feel you on that one. Its a shame when you try to challenge stereotypes that have been placed upon you because of your gender and ethnicity and people dont support you. I am not a strict vegetarian, but I dont eat pork and beef and working on leaving the chicken alone too. I saw this wicked video called Food Inc. that shows all of the problems with the food industry, some really sick shit....

Also, a lot of people hate on you because you are doing something that they want to do but dont have the guts!

Just stay positive in the fact that you know that you are doing something for the benefit of your body, mind, and soul.

This isn't really the worst stereotyped comment/joke that I've heard really. Been a vegetarian for about 4 years now, but I love just turning it around on people and seeing how long I can keep a straight face while they're stammering, apologizing, and trying to explain themselves. "OWN YOUR PAIN!", I say, although one person did get me with purple drink, I do like puprle drink....
