AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

Part of what informs my interest in this site is my affinity and knowledge of SLY STONE's musical canon and social impact. We'd all think Sammy Davis Jr. or Louis Armstrong, rest their souls, were hip if it weren't for SLY & THE FAMILY STONE, the first commercially-successful ALTERNATIVE to pop music produced by Barry Gordy, or early blues-based rock performed by CHUCK BERRY. Avant-garde jazzists Art Ensemble of Chicago owe a debt to SLY, much less jazz-fusionist MILES DAVIS.

SLY SPAWNED FUNK. The mother was soul music (he rocked her), and her parents were Mr. and Mrs. GOSPEL. HIGHER? YES. Their great great grandchildren are BAD BRAINS. The great great great granchildren are the drum machine programming, sampling earlier masters, can't locate middle "C" on a piano hip hop horde: and they rock, too, even Drake.

Any opinions, pro or pro?

pro. i like that sly is very under the radar. hes not enveloped in celebrity culture like many artists. just like him his influence is so great and yet unseen, the man is as powerful as gravity... inescapable.
