Permalink Reply by MissE on September 14, 2011 at 8:53pm Hmmmm...if I think back I think the first goth/darkwave song I ever heard was "Leave Me Alone" by The Cruxshadows, which was quickly followed by "Dead Girls" by Voltaire (who I still adore, despite how lulzy his stuff since Ooky Spooky has been though I have high hopes for "Longest Album title ever with Unicorns*). Cruxshadows kinda lost me after Ethernaut.
Right now, I'm in this really weird period where I don't really have a favorite band. I follow some of the bands I've liked since I was but a squeak of a babybat (the aforementioned Voltaire, Tapping the Vein, The Cure, Rasputina) but I've also been listening and enjoying a lot of dark cabaret stuff, everything in the 'billy family, deathrock and more old school bands, a dash of industrial/more electronic stuff, trip hop and shoegaazer and even a bit of nu-goth, drag, whatever you wanna call it (ex. Zola Jesus, O'Children, Crystal Castles maybe fits here, Salem, The XX, those band that are just symbols and such).
I've been going out to local clubs/nights more often and it's exposing me to some new bands and old favorites lately and it's kind of shaking my ear up.
*Not actual name of album but it is really long and silly
Permalink Reply by Rochelle on September 20, 2011 at 5:54pm I think the first goth album I ever bought was the "New Dark Noise" compilation. One of my friends had made me a hardcore mixtape and Switchblade Symphony's "Gutter Glitter" was on it? I saw that a remix of that song was on that comp, so I got it.
I like a lot of different bands in the goth spectrum. I recently got into Bella Morte a bit more than I used to. Then there's stuff like Diva Destruction, Emilie Autumn, Switchblade Symphony, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Rasputina (their older stuff more than their newer albums), Mors Symphilica, some Eva O...I love all of those female vocalists. I like Bauhaus, Death Ride 69, Big Electric Cat, Peter Murphy and Gary Numan. You can tell I'm in a really great mood when I'm listening to my goth music! ^_^ Yeah, I guess I don't really have just one favorite band- I love them all.
The first Goth bands I loved were Switchblade Symphony, Diva Destruction, Collide, The 69 Eyes, and London After Midnight.
Most of the first Goth artists I discovered by buying compilations from Hot Topic (you know...when they were still cool).
Except for The 69 Eyes... I was trying to download a porn movie and one of their videos showed up in the search. I was like, "69 Eyes? WTF kinda weird porno is that?!" So I investigated and became a fan of their music.
I mostly listen to Industrial and Metal know, but those mentioned above are some of the only Goth bands I still listen to... Their music is just so damn beautiful and awesome.
Permalink Reply by Jordana LeSesne on February 11, 2012 at 7:04pm I absolutely =love= Lacuna Coil and credit them for launching me on my own music career. I front a melodic goth metal band along the same lines here in Seattle called Metamorphia.
My favorite bands are probably pretty predictable: Lacuna Coil, Epica, Nightwish (past and present), Krypteria, Eyes of Eden, 69 Eyes, Flowing Tears, Within Temptation, and ummm Paramore (ok you can cringe I just did too!)
Love Lacuna Coil's new album too, they're returning to their more dark gothic metal sound (thank darkness!)
