wow. i thought more people would respond to this question. kinda disappointing that they didn't. kinda more disappointing that i can't really think of any more besides the obvious:

1. jada pinkett smith from wicked wisdom
2. meshell ndegeocello
3. persia white (i forgot her band's name)
4. sophia ramos (she's on AP)
5. janelle monae

and then i went to my itunes and found

6. jane bang
7. imani coppola
8. dana la rock
9. kimya dawson

i missed the radio show anyway. damn.

Grace Jones must be on the list.  No brainer there.

 

Eartha Kitt.  Her show in Europe was nothing but alternative in that time.

 

There are for sure more, but I can't recall them at them moment. 

 

I think the backing band for Beyonce on her last tour are all influential women, but I didn't see anything but jazz when I looked up the drummer, guitarist, and bassist.
