AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

Hey, my mom and I are from So Cal, but have been out of the state for
the past 4 years. We're about to head back, San Fernando Valley to be precise,
and just want to have an idea of whats going on there at the moment.

Anybody got any good info?

Also, that line up there is a little more appropriate then it might seem; I am coming back from being in New York, which I will be in for the next month and a half. Does anybody have any CHEEEEEAP tips about what to do here. (I am serious on the cheap part. Honestly, over 20 bucks and I aint doin it)

You should look on the Time Out website for the New York listing and also pick up a printed copy of it, they should have price info in there. And also I know most museums/art galleries, if your'e into that, have some nights that are free admission. Also when you look in Time Out listings, some clubs might have cheap or free admission before a certain time, cause you know that's how clubs here in La and other big cities operate to get folks in there.

Hell I'd just amuse myself walking from one borough to the next or taking the subway here and there, but that's me. ;)
Last time I was there the monthly subway pass was around $20 so that's a whole month of transporting here and there.

So what info do you need about San Fernando Valley? I lived there for four years and I still have a good friend or two that live there now and have been there for yeeeears before I was too. I'll see what I can find out for you, D. Good luck!

What brought you and your Mom to NY and what is bringing you back, if you can tell me?
Whats bringing us back ? Its just Cali. We haven't really been able to make any other place fit, and at this point, we'd rather just take on the expense and be somewhere that we are happy.
My mom is from Compton and i was raised all-over, mostly Long Beach and Inglewood. Right now, though, I am in New York for school (Barnard College) and my mom is in North Carolina.
We both feel that things will just be better in Cali, a major plus being that we'll be closer; its always been just me and my mom so we have a pretty co-dependant relationship.
San Fernando was the area we picked mostly because their is a good community college there with a program I am interested in. At the same time, there are some things that we are both looking at further north in LA, and I plan on getting a car a soon as possible, so my interest is more universally LA than just San Fernando Valley. Any help on what the rental market is like out there and how job opportunities are, would be really appreciated. And also, just whats going on culturally. Cali seems to change so much and we haven't been there in a while, so any bits would be great just so that we aren't going in there blind.
Thanks!
