AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

Okay,

Any true musician knows that every genre borrow and blend from different styles. But, I noticed that the styles are being re-defined and re labeled. Like this Metalcore thing nowadays. Metalcore is supposed to be a mix of Metal and Hardcore. But isn't that theoretically Thrash? Also, Hardcore being melded with Thrash is supposed to be Crossover Thrash. Then you have this Extreme Metal shit that melded with Metalcore called Deathcore.

GPR,
Have you ever read that Dr Seuss book where those creatures have the machine that will put stars on their fur? It's pretty profound and I feel it applies to a lot of genre hair splitting, regardless of the overall musical style.

That being said, when I think of thrash I think of speedy bands like Exodus and Sadus. Metalcore makes me think of Walls of Jericho. I believe crossover thrash was formerly punk bands "going metal" by adding elements like double bass pedals and guitar solos back in the day. DRI(they even have an album called crossover), Agnostic Front, Beyond Possession, Attitude Adjustment, and Verbal Abuse are some of the ones I can think of.

Hopefully some of the other members can jump in and opine about metalcore and deathcore, but like the piano man said: "It's still rock and roll to me".
Love to edit that post above and list Suicidal in the crossover bands, but not even Cher can turn back time. I think they did the best with it. Beyond just adding a few metal music staples and song structures, ST wrote some great tunes that still sound good now. Other groups like Agnostic Front abandoned the metal element, or broke up when metal did not prove to be the golden ticket and they had alienated their original fan base.
Exactly, I mean. I don't see the point in all these sub-sub genres. Regarding Agnostic Front, yeah , with any group unless it's truly in them to tackle another genre of music it's always kind of a bad idea to experiment with something they know that might annoy there fans but that they might like and they think there capturing another audience. Oddly enough, these guys are in the Metal category on Comcast's "OnDemand" section,go figure.
I cant get into dat grindcore shit. Itz like da metal twin of autotunez in rap! UGHHHH
Thrash and Crossover Thrash like D.R.I. = Godlike ...Metalcore and Deathcore....and all the other stuff is pretty shitty if u ask me

Over the years I've witnesses countless arguments over labels: who's metal, who's not, who falls under this sub genere, who falls under that one. What a monumental waste of time.

Labels are merely convenient descriptive tools, not religious dogma. And in heavy metal, as in life, very few things fit perfectly into any given catagory. We misfits who are members of this website are living examples of that truism. We transcend labels. We simply are who we are. And that is good enough.

So why worry about whether "band-x" is properly labled thrash or hardcore or whatever. Isn't the more important question, "Do I dig the music?"
