... the other Black experience

In my later years (heh) I've been strongly leaning (in my walker) towards acoustic..... been playing at home/teaching myself for the past year and getting my ladyballs together to start doing some open mics.

Anyone else "go" that way?

I DID its the way to go even if you have stage experience its good to get your songs out infront of people and then after you feel like youve out grown the open mic(u never really do) youll have songs that you know people like its a good test stage because if you mess up people are usually understanding:) i hope you play out like everyday and then you start throwing your own shows.....do it to it:)

I agree-- Open Mic is a great place to try stuff out, and normally an Open Mic crowd is filled with other musicians, who'll offer advice, or maybe play along with you.
I began as a hardcore thrashing metalhead when I began guitar but now I prefer a clean tone electric with reverb. It's not to say the trash in me is gone just that you do grow as a musician. I'm currently practicing singing & playing so once I get that down trying some open mics will likely be the next step
I completey agree with everyone on the whole "it's healthy even if you already are in a band" vibe. The shit ain't easy what so fucking ever!!!
I do open mics just to get a better head on putting myself in front of people.........cause all these later I'm still stage frightened. I just do covers of allman bros./Rollin'Stones/ol'blue grass. the idea for me isn't to put new songs on a test bed but to simply become a better performer doing material that's cozy to me. At this point me and my girl Katey Haire (www.myspace.com/katherinelizabethaire) have a project were we take a few songs every couple of weeks and rearrange the vocal harmonies as strangely as possable. The Idea is just to be as entertaining as possible when ever I'm onstage and this does just that because it's so much harder to perform well without hiding behind distortion like I do with theSpades or BEER (FEAR cover band)
I used to play acoustic daily, but it was in the form of a drum circle. Its was a trip playing ina communal sense with a gang of other cats on differnt levels, frame of minds & 'agendas'... SOmetimes its too much to take, but it can be rewarding. My old band (newly re-formed) Bushoong played an acoustic gig once... It was much harder that we thought... Especially w/o the drummer! I though it was really challenging & wanted to do it some more... Im always G for things that knock you off your square & make you see things different. Its another sonic animal to play acoustic. Like Nick said, it hit guitar players hard!! lol My guitar player played his acoustic maybe 1/4 of the songs then punked -out (lol) & grabbed his Strat. I was like.. See there! You didnt prepare, did you? Acoustic guitars have more tension on the strings & tend to have higher action than an electric. Actually the higher the action the better the tone, but its harder to play! I know this all too well from playing Upright bass. ( I guess I played acoustic daily when I was in the orchestra too).

I say do it, especially if it makes you uncomfortable...!
HOW DID IT GO?

I'm actually doing that, but I get so nervous that I can't play the guitar and sing at the same time (fore shame -.-), so I've been looking for someone to play while I sing.
WELL! Updates updates updates....

I started singing at open mics; right around when I originally posted this, I met a fellow who was looking for a voice (he plays great acoustic)... scary as FUCK at first, but I really started having a ball with it. Then my guitarist got itchy feet, bought an RV and took off for a cross country tour (I'd have gone, but I got a young 'un and the RV was too small for three---I needs my space!)

Anywhoo, so I REALLY cranked up the home learning and actually managed to start playing on my own. I've had god-awful nights, and really fucking good nights. Still in cover song mode, however during Xmas I managed to write a tune of my own (going to try to record it for posting). I usually do:

I Try (Macy Gray)
House of the Rising Sun
Nights in White Satin
Walking in Memphis
Killing Me Softly
Better Days (my song)

I have a couple tunes I did on myspace (other bands I was in):

Thank you ALL for the encouragement!!!!!!!
