AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

I am natural, no chemicals in my hair (well, dye and bleach, but no relaxer, texturizer, etc....) and I like to keep my hair short :) Anyway, sometimes I will wear a wig or extensions when I am in the mood for a change. I have straight wigs and curly ones too. Recently my friend was in my room as I was getting ready and she called me a "sell-out" for wearing a straight turquoise wig instead of rocking my natural hair. I am always an advocate for people wanting to go natural...but does that make me a hypocrite for wearing a wig from time to time?

idk
I'd say HECK NO! : )) It means you're just like me! We like to change things around from time to time. I get bored a lot lol.
i don't think so. what's wrong with changing things up from time to time. i get bored too. one of the reasons why i like having natural hair is that i can wear natural styles when i want (which i prefer) but i can also wear it straight when i want. i also wear a wig or headwrap when i'm feeling lazy. it's all about choice.
Well if you're one then I am one too! It is when you wear your wig because you are ashamed of your natural state...that is when you are a hypocrite. There is nothing wrong with wanting to wear a wig every now and then. Rock your fro...your wig...whatever YOU want to rock that day!
No. You just need to change it up sometimes and if my dreads weren't so long and thick, I'd be rocking wigs too! Tell your friend to get a life!
If your part of a movement and preaching pro-black then yea...but if your a regular chick bettering yourself by not poisoning your scalp and your young which means your gonna want to do different things...then no, of course! It would be great tho if we find more ways to freak natural hair and stop relying on straight and curly weaves to claim variety!! I fiiinally reached that level the last yr so it's just a matter of letting ppl grow and find new ways to freak they shit....it takes a while tho! ; )

Peace, Wisdom and Elevation sis
I disagree with your assessment...A woman wearing altered hair (chemically or otherwise) is not a hypocrite for being involved in activities that are the "pro-black"...Last time I recalled most of the women involved with the civil rights movement were either rocking pressed or permed hair and if it were not for their efforts, we would not be in the position that we are today. If the person is involved in something that is for the greater good of our race I could care less what kind of hair is standing on top of her head. (now if she enforces a belief that nappy = bad and is preaching that to others, that's where I draw the line)

Dude, it's all about YOU. I used to be a nappy nazi but I realized that just like everything else in life it's important to do what you want. Regardless of social convention etc.,
As long as you have the right reasons and know that you're beautiful no matter what you're wearing- that's all that matters.
Express yourself however you want. Don't put up boxes for yourself.

I want a turquoise wig. :(
And a fluffy off white one.
Hell No!!! One of the benefits of being natural is having so many options. You can go from straight to curly at the drop of a hat. But rather than damaging your own hair you can simply just wear a wig. Your friend, was hopefully just saying that as a joke or is maybe being a little to harsh. Different naturals have different stance on things.

Some people feel you arent' fully natural unless you do the big chop, some want everyone to have locs, some this some that but as long as your hair isn't permed or texturized you're natural. So keep rockin wigs. If I had some cash I would be rockin one too dammit, lol
NO.
I have been natural forever I have had very few relaxers in my 25 years of life.. maybe 6 0r 7 relaxers.
as for me I need a little change every now and again. so you may see with braids down to my ass, or a corporate short cut wig, or my big and natural , or short N curly, and on a occasion ...a faded haircut.
Change is normal as long as the change is not because someone told you negatives about being natural and that changed you to conform. but if your just feeling a frisky and want to express it with a funky blue bob. then do so.
Your friend has black elitist self-esteem issues. Since your hair ia a part of your person, its better to use the fake stuff than risk damaging it altogether just for style. Just cause you're an african doesn't mean you have to sacrifice style and creativity... Now maybe if you had turquoise locks or braids, your friend would have been quiet or thought you to be creative. Mix it up!
No thats stupid its your hair. I think the whole debate of whose the more die hard natural is ridiculous. I think its about options and not feeling pressured by outside forces to conform to someone else's ideal of what "good hair" is. Girl rock them wigs if its what you want to do. Your friend needs to mind her business who are you hurting by wearing wigs. As long as you live up to your personal definition of how you want to look and present yourself more power to you.
