again. But I never follow through. I start off by making some decent two strand twists all over my head...but by the 2nd week, It's past time to wash it...then I get the urge to take them down and detangle lol.
I guess I still have to get the proper mentality going. The mentality that will tell me to just 'let go'. ..and that nappy hair 'will loc because that is what it's supposed to do' ...or some kind of mental pep talk like that.
I know that locs can be taken apart. I've seen people do it online. But for most people, they are permanent. I think it's the permanence that scares me. Watching my hair transform before my very eyes will be so weird!
On the other side, it's the freedom of locs that's attractive to me. Detangling my hair every week after a wash isn't fun. It's more like a chore sometimes...even with the best conditioners.
Think about it. Being 'comb free'! wow, what a concept!
lol tell me about it! I'm trying something different this time. Today, I didn't wash my hair. Instead, I detangled it and put it into about 20 medium/ large twists with conditioner. When I get ready to shampoo, I'll try keeping the twists IN. When they start to get fuzzy, I'll just comb each twist out and retwist them individually. Saves time.
This past weekend, I got lazy and decided to wear the fro out. I swear...each little strand turned into a corkscrew knot lol.
It was cute for a day or two, but then the ends felt dry...then after 3 days of misting with water and applying hair lotion and cream, it was still Brillo city.
So yeah, my hair acts better when it's twisted out of the way.
Protective styles and hiding the hair challenge until Spring.
Same here. But come to think of it,. I've already failed. ...I'm wearing an afro puff right now.
Last night/this morning I washed my hair in the sink like I used to, to save water. I thought the sink was too high back when I first moved in, now I know it's too low. Maybe I was high that time. ...my back can barely take that. But my hair does feel better. Didn't detangle, just tossed all that stuff up into a puff.
I used to braid my hair and then lather it up outside of the shower then wash in, it saved me a few hours. And instead of a baby-sized hair ball I only lost a golf ball of hair.
I thought about it for the longest time too. I am a training opera singer and everytime I win a competition my comments look like this: "Great voice! It's nice to have good training in here for a change. You have excellent trills. Your hair and makeup are too distracting. In the world of opera, we like to see who you are, not your cosmetology skills."
So I got the most interesting looking synthetic locks I could find. I made most of them then added bulk with a few I bought. Dreadlocks always startle my judges, but in the end everyone loves them. I say go for them, you'd look nice. =-]
Thank you for your feedback Onyx. BTW, you're gorgeous and your voice is stellar! (I just sent you a friend request) When I was in middle school, I had a friend that reminded me a lot of you. She was a voice major. She went on to the performing arts high school here. After that, she moved to NY and graduated from Vassar. : ) Keep up the good work!
I am struggling with the exact same thing. Yes I am afraid of the locs permanent status. But funny thing is...I have been damn near bald before...Tha Big Chop. So I don't know what I am so afraid of. I want to badly. I still may do it too. Going through some transformations in my life. That may be one of them!
A lot of my family members are loced. I really like locs a lot (thats a tongue twister). I really am the same way, I don't want a permanent hairstyle. Thats why I got away from perms in the first place. I know that locs can be versatile but in all honestly I have no respect for people who grow locs and then cuts them all off. So I tell people all the time, don't try to start locs unless you are going to be committed to the lifestyle. I guess I also look at locs from a more Rasta point of view. If I were you, I would just try some "loc styles" like Genie locs or yarn braids. But it really sounds like you are more of a person who likes to change your hair a lot. So perhaps you should just try a bunch of styles before making a big commitment.
I have had my locs for a little bit over a year, and I have enjoyed them. I do have my days where I miss my fro, but thats why selecting your loc type and pattern is so important. Not only for maintenance purposes, but even for style.
I started my locs with small single braids due to my hair type. And when the new-growth came, I would use a latch-hook to tie it down.
Now that they have matured, I wash and latch about every three weeks or so.
I just recently cut my locs, I was really bored with my styling options, so instead of cutting them all off, I cut the front to give it a new style.
So, the trick is being able to have a set of locs that you can work with. Mine are medium-small so I can still corn roll them, two strand twists, put in rollers to make them curly....
If you check out youtube, there are a lot of beautiful women on there who have shared different style ideas and maintenance techniques. and there are sooo many different techniques, you have to find the right one for your hairtype. their are Braidlocs (thats the one that i have), sistetlocs (where are very pricy and a lot of work), free form (just letting your hair do its own thing), back combing, etc...
Nothing with hair is permanent because you can always cut it out! and its just hair so it will grow back!
Thank you all for the replies. I haven't abandoned the idea. ...but like GullahGG said, I do like to change up my look. I might just start back with the two strand twists for a while. Anything that will allow me to not have to comb my hair for a few weeks. <3
I'm on my 2nd set of locs. With the 1st set, because of my job and uniform and things, my scalp got really, REALLY dry and my hair started falling out, so I cut them. Didn't perm anything, though. Went from a 'fro to the occasionally press n curl.. In the end, I loc'ed again. I've had this set for almost 3 years. They've just gotten long enough for me to do things like put them in pony tails (2, one on each side of my head), or braid small sections.
Locs are a big commitment. The first year, I was constantly washing and twisting. Some of them were started with 2 strand twists, but near the end, I got tired and just twisted the rest at the root. And I DID wash my hair.. I wash it once a week, usually (especially in summer.. winter, not so much). I think it depends on the hair type and what products you use, if any.
I love my locs. Sometimes I think of "gee, what if I cut them, or de-tangle them and get this style, or this one..." In the end, I prefer my locs. Unless my hair starts coming out, I can't see getting rid of them again.
