I hear you, kiddo, but always remember punk, much like other kinds of "beauty", is in the eye of the beholder. Follow your OWN gut and you might create something really unique and cool instead of following someone else's lead. I'm a dinosaur now, but I've always been into "DIY". Sometimes you find the coolest and most amazing ways to express yourself when you experiment and let your creativity flow. Don't be afraid to take a risk and play around with clippers, razors, hair bleach or hair dye -- you can always patch-test with the bleach or dye to see if you dig it. Before I began dreading my hair back in 1995, I wore mohawks and fins for almost a decade. Sometimes they were bright blue...sometimes they were red...and sometimes they were bright blue AND red. I mostly kept my sides shaved to the skin, but sometimes I would let the hair grow a bit so I could shave spiderweb patterns on the sides. When I stopped using the creamy crack, I even played around with doing funky cornrows in patterns on the sides that would compliment leaving the tips undone so the rest of my hair could be free to form a fluffy mohawk. I'll stop now before I write a novel, but just be good to yourself and have fun! Always remember to condition and be mindful of not over-working your hair. As for what my hair looks like now, I'm still having fun with my dreads -- I gently bleached and then dyed them with Manic Panic's Hot Hot Pink several months ago and I'm in LOVE with this color. There's a pic in my profile photos -- and there's also an old pic of one of my fins from 1990 or '91 (I had worn a regular mohawk for years and I got bored and decided to shave the back of my hair off, too -- that's why I called it a fin).
NOOOOO! Write a novel!
Gently bleached?
I've been day dreaming about bleaching my hair and dying it hot pink or neon blue for years but I am so uncreative and matchy-matchy.

Hey, sis'! I definitely hear you. Okay....here's a wee novel and I hope I don't make your eyes bleed :o) I've been caught in so many ruts over the years. Sometimes we just need to dip a toe in first and then just plunge straight into something new to shake things up and have fun. My dreads are beginning to go gray, and while I am definitely looking forward to sporting a full head of gray/silver locks one day like Toni Morrison, right now I want to have some fun with color after having dyed my hair the same old boring black and/or brown, to battle the grays, with occasional streaks of color over the past 15 years. I don't ever want to knock another sister's choice to go to a salon for professional help, but I prefer to walk the DIY road -- it just goes with my old, battered punk rock head (and heart). My best advice is to educate yourself and become aware of the options, products and risks that go with bleaching and coloring your hair. That being said, L'Oreal's Super Blonde creme lightening kit for lifting dark brown/black hair colors really worked for me. When I say "gently bleached" I absolutely mean I always have my eyes on breakage/over-stressing issues after having locks after all of these years -- I'm a fanatic for watching the processing time and monitoring the levels of lifting it took to get to a light brown/dark blonde shade so the Manic Panic pink would show up well and pop without my locks being fried from over-processing with the bleach. And I don't over-do it with obsessive touch-ups on my new growth. I keep up with moisturizing/conditioning my locks with my beloved jojoba oil and fave Oyin Handmade spritz. I've had some great success with keeping things simple and natural on/in my dreads for all these 15 years. Hair bleach and Manic Panic are the only products with chemical or complicated ingredients that I use compared with my routine use of jojoba oil, honey, pure aloe vera gel, sulfate-free shampoo (with the occasional apple cider vinegar and baking soda rinses) and I'm happy to say that I haven't had any breakage issues whatsoever.

I've used Manic Panic going all the way back the very early 80s and the formulas were much weaker and washed out quicker back then. I'm really digging the new amplified formula because some of the shades are sooo vibrant (some actually glow under blacklight) -- like the Hot Hot Pink in my locks now -- and they last longer than regular Manic shades (here's a link to their site: http://www.manicpanic.com/amplifiedhaircolor.html). I've also had some success with Special Effects hair dye, too, and they have a lot of fun shades, as well (here's their link: http://www.specialeffectsusa.com/hair_dye.html). Their Cupcake Pink was a real let-down for me, though. It was nowhere near as vibrant as I was hoping for.

I played around with the idea of making my dreads Hot Hot Pink for the looooooongest time. And one day, it just finally clicked -- kind of like the times I was inspired to pick up my clippers and shave my mohawk/fin or do the spiderweb designs or other patterns on the sides of my head. You definitely have the creativity, sis' -- having the interest in dying your hair a cool hot pink or neon blue is a great spark. If you feel too matchy-matchy or uncreative, give yourself a push to step outside of that safe comfort zone. Take a look at those amazing colors and let yourself be inspired, chica. If you look on Manic's site, there's a section where you'll see a collection of photos from folks who are playing around with the colors. It could be a bit of inspiration for you. The bottom line is to have fun and express yourself. And when it comes to safety and dipping that toe in before you dive straight in, I can't say enough about patch-testing. You want to be sure you're not allergic to what you're putting on your hair, but you can also get a good idea of how the bleach and/or color translates in your hair if you're really nervous about doing your whole head at once.

I don't mean to sound cliche, and as I'm writing this the shadow of Saturday, 9/11, is now passing into Sunday, 9/12, but life is too damn short for us to hold ourselves back from exploring and expressing ourselves. I'm trying to stand strong as I watch a close cousin of mine struggle with his end-stage cancer, and you want to know what he said to me?? He said he wished that he would've listened to his heart and "gone punk" with his hair and general lifestyle a long time ago. He was one of the people in my family who gave me the hardest time about being a punk -- he watched me fall into it in the 70s, and then as I came of age in the 80s. He admitted that he was so afraid of being judged by the family and people he knew, but he always felt a secret envy for how I stood up and went against the tide -- and that made him bitter and critical as hell. I was totally floored. Sometimes you just never know the impact you're having on people until it comes down to painful times like this. Needless to say, while it's not really possible to navigate bleaching and dying his hair right now in his condition, I did give him a rad mohawk -- and made a couple compilation cds of my fave punk songs. He was totally stoked. Give yourself a push and go for it, kiddo. And please post pics!!! :o)

Oh man I'm totally feeling this thread. I'm on the verge of something new, I feel it. I'm 28 now, and definitely have become a more expressive person over the years, but still want so badly to get creative - to show on the outside how I feel on the inside. I've fallen into a rut since I have to get up at 5am to be at work at 7, and since jeans and a plain shirt are acceptable, best believe that's what I wear. But I can do better than that.

I agree with the matchy matchy feeling, but you know what? Every time I kinda went out on a limb, fashionwise, as long as you wear it and OWN it, people buy it. We're all just experimenting anyway...
Go for it, kiddo. Take a step outside that comfort zone and love who you are ♥♥♥
