Chlorine is bad for your hair make sure to wash it and condition it extra if you are going to swim. Also make sure to moisturize it extra. If at all possible wear a swimming cap. I have extremely dry hair so I usually can't be arsed.
Swimming is not my thing but I have a daughter who is part fish. I do have advice but I confess to being a bit of an evangelist! I am a born again Natural ! LOL! So you may not like my advice. Apologies in advance if it seems extreme.
Judging from your photo you have lots of hair. My daughter's hair is very long and thick. I have yet to find a swimming cap that keeps all water out - the only solution that works for her is to wash her hair after every swim or end of a swimming day. I use herbal essence or innecto coconut conditioner to co wash (stopped using shampoo a year ago), comb through while soaking wet with a wide tooth comb and then add more conditioner which i leave in. (If your hair is real, real thick and dries quickly and makes combing the whole head difficult, wash in sections, comb through and twist each section before moving on to the next) If she's swimming every day, I make 8 -12 fat plaits and leave it to dry. If she swims with fine braids I leave them in while I co-wash. I also stopped using mineral based products - which was hard because 99% of hair pomades for black folk is made of petroleum because its shiny (and we do love our hair to shine) and cheap. Good products are hard to find in the uk or very expensive so i mix up coconut oil, castor oil and shea butter....My daughter thinks i am obsessed and calls me Hair Witch but our hair has never been healthier. And healthy hair is pretty, shiny hair. Oh And deep condition once a week.
Sermon over. Good luck. Have fun. And let me know how it goes.
I usually wear a swim cap and goggles since im allergic to chlorine and love swimming, but I usually swim in a pond or Lake so i dont have to worry.
