AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

I need your help guys. I moved to Iowa in 2008 and I went natural a little over a year ago. However, I have kept it in kinky twists the whole time because the climate here. It so cold, dry, and windy. Anyone have any good tips on wearing my natural hair and protecting it from being damaged?

Off the top of my head you could try.....
1)Protective styles, the ones that keep the ends from being exposed at least and don't need frequent manipulation.
2)Upping your moisture: by adding an extra deep conditioning when you can, moisturizing regularly & sealing the ends with an oil or butter.
3) You might want to reevaluate your products, since it's dry where you are you wanna avoid humectants since they'll suck the moisture out of your own hair instead of the air it it's dry out..... I'd also use heavier products i.e. butters vs. light oils, creamy leave ins over lotions, etc.
If you need more ideas it'd help to say specifically what you do now so others can give more specific advice. Good luck!
^^That's good advice, I'd never thought about humectants doing the reverse in winter before.
I have the same issue!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've been using mostly shea butter, because I like to wear my hair out vs. twists. I don't think my hair islong enough yet to look good in twists that I would wear out of the house!!!! LOL

By the way, I have a natural hair blog. www.coilyworld.blogspot.com

You may find more info there.
well you have the right idea, your going to need as much moister as possible, and a holding style(kinky twist) is best for right now.
And a couple of good things to get moisture and protection on your hair through the winter is invest and in raw shea butter(4.99-20.00). It will be a white and greyish color. and you can melt it down and infuse it with some coconut oil, or avacado butter.you can most likely find it at a Farmers Market, or urbanb Beauty supply store. You can also use the yellow shea, but it's a little inferior to the white grey. but in Iowa I'm thinking it might be difficult finding natural products. or you can also use Giovanni nutraifix conditioner, also with Giovanni direct leave in conditioner, or the giovanni smooth as silk line. you can get these products at Target, Wholefoods, and some walmarts. Wholefoods has there products on sale right now . you looking at paying 6.99-9.99
You can also use Pantene Pro-v relaxed and natural 99%Moisture line.
Stay away from drying agents such as gels and sprays with alcohol.
hope that helps
Thank you all for the help!
