... the other Black experience

So who here actually has a career in photography? Would you recommend anything or have any piece of advice for anyone who is looking into starting a career in photography?

When I started out I got this fluke gig with Jane Magazine before it went defunct covering the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. I was still an amateur but what I always heard from professionals was, "Just Shoot!" It's was about taking as many pictures as you could because at least you know a few of them will come out right. lol

I've done a few live shows since then, mostly of my friends' bands so nothing too spectacular but I always keep that motto in my head and I hope to build up a better portfolio and really go somewhere with it.
Who really has a career in anything? I don't want to be the resident cynic but, I don't want a career in photography; I want a life in it. I already have a career, and that is what keeps my lights on, and my car on the asphalt but--know what?--when I come home that shit stays where it is, and my head is now free to be occupied with what I want to do in life--create and interpret and reassign and (re) define--the bag I'm living in.

I've been wondering that my damn self. For now I'll keep taking pictures.
great thread... I am really interested in getting started in photography..... simply saying hi and chimin' in on the discussion that was started. Oh, and I am also a young curator out of New orleans who is always looking to bring exciting work to the most africanized city in the US..... okay I'm bragg'in about my city just a bit, but wanna put New orleans on the map!
I wish i did, lol

Forgot that I even wrote this. Here it is time has gone by, things have changed but my dreams have remained the same. I enrolled in college and will be working towards an associates degree in Photography. I just plan on shooting and shooting and building a good portfolio.
