AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

We are all hotties up in this peice. A guy referred to me as a BBW, and I told him 'I aint claimin that set.' He was a little confused by my reaction. "Hey I am who and what I am, no labels needed."

I get worn out sometimes by the scruitny and opinions of other people about black women's bodies, shapes, health, beauty and so forth. Not to mention the endless hair splitting discussions over 'what is a plus size and what is a BBW.' like what is the number.

Gorgeous is gorgeous. If you love yourself it will show, you radiate confidence and are naturally sexy.

Am I the only one who gets a little bent out of shape over all the labeling that goes on?

I like to think of "BBW" as a title, not a label. But I understand where you're coming from. I do agree that there are too many labels out there, and we should not be reduced to a size number. But on a positive note, I think these labels mean that us curvy chicks are being noticed more. Just my two cents. :)
"Plus Size" is for clothes shops and "BBW" is for pornos.

"Damn" is for the silky ladies of AfroPunk. Go, You.

What does it mean that I have never heard of BBW? What the hell is that?

I agree that the term "BBW" has a sexual connotation (and not in a nice way). It implies that if you describe yourself as a "BBW", it means that you're somehow easy and desperate for any type of sex. That was my impression after hearing the term on Craig's List and from previously belonging to a BBW social group a few years ago. The men that would approach you or claim they love "BBWs" were perverted trolls who assumed we were so desperate for any type of attention (ie. lower standards) that we would jump at any sexual proposition.

The term "plus size" makes me think of a matronly old lady. I don't identify with any of these labels...I'm learning how to accept myself as I am right now. If you can't accept yourself, noone else will.
EXACTLY! They have a BBW night at a club here and it's definately geared toward fetishism and trolls. The poor clueless women go in thinking that the men there will want relationships with them. NAH, they just want to rock off to you. BBW to me has always seemed like objectification to me. I agree plus size reminds me of the department in JCPenny that had all those big square church looking dresses that were made to hide your shape with hideous prints or black or navy fabric.

I'm a whole other incantation of curvy woman and I don't want any part of these degenerate labels.

It's retarded, I mean if you are a guy who likes big girls so much then talk to them when you're out at a regular place. I bet these cats don't talk to "fat chicks" in front of skinny people. They want them all in one place or something. Dirty secret- lame.
Many men are attracted to women who if their friends knew they wouldn't approve, and that approval is everything to them.

After reading all the subsequent comments, I have to take back my original comment. Ya see, ladies, I remember back in the day when there was a fashion magazine called "BBW" for us curvy chicks. And that's what I was referring to. (Does anyone remember this, or am I the oldest one here?) This BBW label seems to have taken a drastic change in meaning over the years. Forgive me for not keeping up; I live in Japan, after all. :)

Your not old !! :-) I remember that magazine, it was the first time I actually saw cute clothing in my size without digging through every store in every borough in NYC. Or tailoring two slim chick outfits together to create one for myself
I barely remember it. I think I saw it once. I wasn't a plus size then.
WOW! I didnt know that BBW now has a sexual connotation to it, I just always remembered the magazine --at the time I was younger and the magazine was a bit old and staid for me but I appreciated its existence as well as the term. I also see on dating websites BHM, Big Handsome Men, that's a new one to me.
Yeah, labels are for soupcans. Same as the 'chocolate' or 'redbone' crap, come on.

I like what I like, thick or thin. And I ain't being democratic, I see true beauty & sexiness in all sizes daily in the street and at work.
