AFRO-PUNK

... the other Black experience

How do you define your style? Where do you shop?

As  Plus sized woman, shopping for me is like hell.  I have certain style ides in my head, but I dont necessarily want to pay that amount of money.

I usuly go for a "bohemian edge" type of look. But its hard to find things in my size that enhances my body!

Any thoughts ladies?

I'm a tshirt and jeans kinda girl, myself. But to mix it up a little I do throw in handbags and scarves (I'm an accessories whore! ;). Usually to top off my style I head to Torrid and Lane Bryant (the usual) but try to always make the style my own. (I get lots of compliments on my Black Barbie tee).
I feel you on the T-Shirt and jeans, that is very much my daily style, but im trying to change it up a bit. I like Torrid but they are so expensive! I havnt been to Lane Bryant in a while because i have been rolling thru Ashley Stewart! I really trying to get away from the t-shirts and jeans, but if thats what i have, then i need to dress it up! thanks for the accessory tips!

Ashlee Stewart has some GREAT styles and the price point sometimes is actually more reasonable. They have great stuff on sales too. My niece actually worked there as one of the managers for several years. There is another mall shop that used to have really cool styles and good prices years ago, Petries Plus. I dont' know if they are still in business anywhere, but look out for that place.

You're right about Torrid but if you see something really nice and cool, save up for it and buy it! California African bought me the coooolest straples white pleated buttoned top there when she was down here visiting for the LA AfroPunk show at the Roxy.

I hadn't even been in the shop here except perusing the stuff online at their website when it was first on.

OH! OH! I also have another suggestion for you. If you have any secondhand/thrift stores in your area, seriously take the time to look at them. Especially in smaller towns and in areas where a lot of retired older folks live.

Seriously!! I found this out when I was visiting a good friend of mine who moved here from LA to Palm Springs.
Palm Springs, if you don't know, is an area a lot of people retire to, from at least way back in the 1940's. That city and all the ones surrounding it are filled with thrift stores with the coolest shit in the stores. My friend is very tall and full figured and also very broad shouldered. I remember one day she found TONS of great 50s and 60s style outfits and dresses that fit her to a tee! She of course cracked the joke that "well, Rosenda, you know some old lady who built exactly like me just kicked the bucket....*" We all cringed at her comment but it is probably true.

The thing is not only do a lot of retired folks have all these clothing, but also people retire and they start dresing different and just don't have room for all those clothes. You will find every size imaginable in those shops and the selection is different every time you go. My friend also told me when she was visiting a small town in Pennsylvania a few years ago, she also found some great clothes for very reasonable in one of those small thrift shops out there too.

So keep your eyes open..............you never know when you'll find some really cool fashions on a budget.
I shop at Cato's, Rainbow, Old Navy, Lane Bryant, and I've looked at Torrid(I have yet to order somethings from there).
and to add, it is kind of hard to find places to shop that have nice looking clothes, but all of those places are pretty cool....sometimes walmart has some cool clothing...I always find something good at Cato's....I haven't tried Ashley's yet but I will. Also my style, is kind of all over the place, lol it's hard for me to decide or be boxed into one style genre...so I just go by what I am feeling day to day.

same here, shopping is hell because cute plus size clothes can be damn expensive. I would say my style is a bit hard to describe. I wear alot of tank tops with jeans, to bohemic style sundresses with some wild patterns with converse. and sometimes upscale dressy.
So I usually catch the sales with OldNavy for my tanks and such. Jeans it all depends where I am. Dots has some pretty cute skinny jeans that fit me well @ a size 20. they help suck in the tummy. also the Levi instantly slim jeans look really good. also I hit up Target alot. I go through the clearance and find alot of things. Oh, and for my dresses. I have found the most cutest dresses @ ROSS. And alot of them have been under $10. I live in FLA, so we have a bealls outlet, and Bealls stores and I usually find some cute shoes and great tops there as well. so i hope that helps.
All of you are awesome!! I appreciate all of the feedback, Im about to go hit up some thrifty stores today ;) wish me luck!!
^^^ How did your thrift store shopping go?

Given my type of work, I have a bunch of suits. I love the way I look in a skirt suit. I always accessorize with a bit of African flavor: cowry shells, bangles, wraps... When I'm not working, I rock jeans and hoodies. I love it. Oh, I found some low plunging necklines and I rock those with Big Breastessess Pride. lol I didn't use to show off my girls so much when I was younger. Now, I'll put on some jeans, a low cut top and a blazer and be out on the weekends. I feel freer than ever to show my shape now a days. I never tried to hide behind baggy clothes as a young woman. But, now I'm celebrating my curves like never before. If I feel good rockin it, then I wear it. Maybe being 41, married with two yungins, and having a somewhat successful career, I have a "Fuck 'em" attitude. This is me, yall. All this. My booty. My breasts. My belly!
I don't have " a look" anymore, just what looks cute to me, short skirts, lots of capris, I love to show cleavage, being older, I kinda need to be sorta "regular" looking at work, but I have been collecting some really cool converse all stars that I will rock on the weekends. I lost some weight last year and I am more comfortable wearing TIGHT-big booty enhancing jeans than when I was bigger (I'm still a big gal tho). Anyway I love shopping at Ross, but I must say Ross in other states (like GA) does not seem to have the great selection of plus sized stuff like we do in Cali, I love that store tho, the prices are the best, way better than tj maxx and marshalls, i rarely spend more than 7.99 for a top. I like to catch the extra 50% off clearance sales at old navy (i couldnt fit them a couple yrs ago) and believe it or not, I have actually found some cool crap at Target! I never ever looked at their clothes before, but I have a lot of favorite pieces from there (clearance rack again). I went in Dots in IL and Catos in TN , Dots had some cute jeans, the tops looked a little cheap to me, Catos seemed overpriced for what you were getting, but I did buy stuff there, OH there was some store in Chicago called pay/half --they had some cute things. and also for "individuality" a pair of scissors and some rudimentary sewing can go a long way
OH Rosenda, the Petries plus/Marianes/jean nicole/Stuarts company went bankrupt as I recall and the stores all disappeared in the late 90s i think, I liked Petries plus for cheap "clubbin" outfits, but it used to annoy me that then size 18-20 me sometimes had to buy 24s in that store!
I used to try thrift stores back in the 80s, but I was convinced that other than my mother, no one in the 60s was over a size 10! I rarely found anything.
Check out eShakti. Every item they have goes up to a 24, and they specialize in beautiful, handcrafted arty clothing.
As far as shopping I do Torrid and Newport News frequently. They have good prices and stuff that fits. I sew too, and when I gained weight I found out quickly that the stuff I like to rock was not available to me, so had to make it myself.

Many times I get things and have to tailor them to hug me the right way, so if you buy something and it's too baggy, get a needle and thread and take it in so it compliments you. I bought some of those Kymaro jeans and I really like them alot. Very flattering to the curvy figure.
I hit up a thrift store the other day, i didnt find anything at all :(. i was very upset because i was excited! However, I went to Ashley Stewart and that Clearence rack was okay; i was able to find some cool tank tops that i can mix and match.... but still.... not much luck~~!
