When I was younger I thought the former. And as I got older I realized the latter... thankfully.

They don't always render a person completely out of touch with reality but they can definitely alter one's perception of reality and I do think that the majority of addicts do it to escape.

cognitive dissonance begins with the image, not its perception- this statement is an act of omission rather than a reaction to commission
