sasha marie: an afropunk dj mix

August 16, 2019

We are beyond proud to feature a mix from Sasha Marie, one of the Soulection crew’s absolute secret-weapon DJs. Just as we are excited AF that Sasha is playing at AFROPUNK Brooklyn, and at Soulection’s super-special AFROPUNK After Dark party (at Public Records, a new BK spot with one of the best new soundsystems in NYC).

One reason we hold Sasha in especially high esteem is that, besides being an incredible mixer who moves seamlessly from beat vibe to beat vibe, Sasha is also a digger with a monster ear, finding tracks that we end up copping and spinning for months on end. Press play and see what we mean. Then read what Sasha Marie has to say about DJ’ing and AFROPUNK. Promise, she’s one of the best!

Can you identify some of the music on the mix?

I kind of went around the world with this mix, from indie to afrobeats, to reggeaton and funk! I wanted to start this mix off chill and build up the energy to more danceable sounds.

What does the music mean/represent for you?

I love that this mix showcases my love for different genres of music plus most of the artists featured are artists of color. The funk music always reminds me of my pops and riding in his low rider car, afrobeats remind me of my time in South Africa and being exposed to the amazing sounds and reggeaton reminds me of my time as a teenager dancing awkwardly to “Gasolina” by Daddy Yankee at my middle school dance.

How did you first get into DJ’ing, and who are some of your DJing influences?

I have my pops to thank for getting me DJ equipment when I was younger. What started out as a hobby and a way for me to express myself in my bedroom grew to me playing my first gig at a gay bar [while] underage to making mixes and putting them out on Soundcloud to meeting my best friend Andre Power who then introduced me to Soulection and the rest was history! Now I am here, doing an interview for AFROPUNK Brooklyn and all I have to say is that it’s been an incredible journey thus far and I wouldn’t trade it for the world. As far as influences, Venus X has always been a major one for me as well as my fam Andre Power, Joe Kay, Jerreau Vandal and more.

What are you most looking forward to at AFROPUNK Brooklyn?

Seeing all the incredible acts (especially FKA twigs), playing with my team, making new friends and memories!

What does the phrase “We See You” mean to you?

I think it means seeing YOU for all the beauty that YOU are inside and out. YOU as in the real you, the you without ego, just spirit.

Catch Sasha Marie at AFROPUNK Brooklyn on August 24th, and at Soulection’s AFROPUNK After Dark after-party.
