I remember the times so vividly, hearing people talk about them as a historical footnote is surreal...not in a negative way, but almost as if it was a dream. I first played CB GB's in 1981 or 1982. I was the bass player/backing vocs in Public…

Man, It's a coincidence that you brought them up because I was singing "Rag" from Ten Spot the other day! Man, they are truly an original band; there's really no label that you can put on their sound. Saw them in 93' when…

A Nation of Misfits: Shudder to Think

In their 12 years together, Shudder To Think were an anomaly. Too pop for the punk scene, but too punk for the pop market, they have remained a hidden gem in both; occupying the space between the Revolution Summer bands of 1985 and the mid-90's second wave of glam rock.A Nation of Misfits: Shudder to Think***people might hate this one on a dc band that went pop, but whatever. easily one of my favorite bands of all time. in all their incarnations.*** Review…See More

Cranky, but Who Gives a Fuck: Shellac

Steve Albini has made a career of being a cranky, confrontational, old bastard in constant search of perfect audio fidelity. From his earliest days in the industrial punk band Big Black, Albini has challenged his fans to tolerate him with sarcastic, biting lyrics that often satirize sexism, racism, and homophobia by playing them out to their logical extreme.A Nation of Misfits: Cranky, but who Gives a Fuck-ShellacReview Nathan Leigh…See More

@bowerybetty: yeah if you read any interviews with them lately they just sort of dismiss it as being young and a little overzealous in their newfound rastafarianism. but i was really disappointed to read the pitchfork interview. i would have thought…

Great blast from the past! I got to know Tim Kerr a bit in the late 80s when he was playing with a band called Bad Mutha Goose and and he was often trying to encourage me to play a song or two with them. Unfortunately, another band member…

Big Boys, more than just a Bad Brains fuck up

It's almost criminal that Austin skatepunk pioneers The Big Boys are known more for their pivotal roles in the history of other bands than for their own wonderfully bizarre raucous blend of hardcore, post-punk, jazz, psychedelic, and straight up funk. Mentions of The Big Boys are usually either in the context of discussing onetime opening act The Red Hot Chilli Peppers (my 4th least favorite band...saved only by Breaking The Girl which I'll begrudgingly admit is a good song) who essentially…See More

well yes corporations are a big part of the problem, but ultimately the responsibility lies in a scene which in the interest of self-definition tends to reject bands that fail to conform to its vision of non-conformity. what i'm trying to do is…

it's not individual bands. it's corporations. period. what the response here is is: being divided and conquered. it's the industry. i know how to read.

A Nation Of Mistfits: BAD RELIGION – INTO THE UNKNOWN

Bad Religion are as responsible as anyone for the homogenization of punk rock. Sometime around 1990's Against The Grain, it sounds like they decided they'd already reached perfection, so why bother trying to do anything new anymore? Here's how Bad Religion songs go: verse where introduces an idea, fist-raising chorus with anthemic oozin ahhs that sums it up which follows the format [name of song] [phrase] [name of song] [phrase that rhymes with the first one] [name of song again], then a small…See More

About Me
"A Nation of Misfits" with Nathan Leigh

We all know how folks categorize punks. We're the kids who look differently, dress differently, and will more than likely try to light something on fire. So it's strange that in the 30+ years that punk has been alive (and grappling with its existence) the music has evolved into a fairly homogenized sound. While every band has their own variation on the formula, the one-two punch of the kick-snare beat, a rapid-fire picked bass line, twin guitars heavily distorted through a Marshall half-stack, and rousing gang-vocals on the choruses-- the sounds are all but ubiquitous.

*Introducing, "A Nation of Misfits." Our featured columnist, Nathan Leigh, will focus on the misfits within the punk community; the bands that don't sound like the others; the bands that rebel against the rebels. Yep, the sub-genre of the sub-genre of the sub-genre.
