I was born and raised in Uptown, Washington, D.C., though at this point it feels like I’ve lived almost everywhere over the years. Like most these days, I’ve been through a lot of hardships in my life, and continue to work through them today.
I’m not a person who complains without action to better myself, so you probably won’t ever see or hear me talking about a situation I’ve been through like I’m not grateful for having experienced it. I feel that no matter what happens, it happens for a reason, and you can use your situations to help you become a better person in the long run. I’m a cool person from jump and will always be that way, laid back and chilled.
The Music
My path to the microphone wasn’t as straight forward as a lot of other people I know. It wasn’t one of those born to do things. It actually began with a general interest in writing. I started using writing as an escape at an early age. Mostly slam poetry, but also more general things like short stories or blog like articles relating to whatever I had an interest at the time.
It wasn’t until around 18 or 19 that I actually, by some twist of fate, realized I could take one of my greatest escapes like music, and incorporate that with my love of writing. It actually all happened out of no where. I had been chillin’ with some friends one night when someone started up a cypher. A couple people had been freestyling when jokingly someone baited me to hop in. I hadn’t actually done it before but I did anyhow.
Once I started there was no stopping me that night. It was a major light bulb moment for me. I began pursuing it on a serious level about a year later, and haven’t stopped since then. It started out as a hobby, then as an outlet for stress relief, to a love, and now an obsession. I honestly couldn’t see myself pursuing anything other than music at this point.
Why They Call Me “Choice”
This is probably the question I get asked more than anything else. How I got the nickname “Choice.” To save myself the trouble of having to answer it a hundred more times I figure I can get it out of the way by doing it now.
It’s actually a pretty ironic story. I had been involved in some poetry slams, and at the time I recited some poems that revolved around how our choices and decisions in life are a direct cause to many, if not all of the situations we find ourselves in. Essentially urging everyone to open their eyes and think twice.
After a show one night I had been chillin’ with a group of friends, when one in-particular started up a discussion about the poems I had performed earlier that night. The discussion led to a heated debate that I ultimately won, or at least got my point across. After which point, people would call me “Choice” to be funny. The name stuck and soon became my stage name.
