jean beauvoir: blonde ambition – a rock history lesson

When the name Jean Beauvoir comes to mind, most anyone who ever saw him in the height of his career remembers one thing: his giant blonde Mohawk. Iconic and oh-so cutting edge, it became synonymous with the musician/vocalist himself. But there’s much more to Mr. Beauvoir than big hair. He has earned his place in rock and roll history.

Jean began his musical career before he was even old enough to drive to a gig. The Flamingos, of legendary doo-wop fame, were the first band he played with around age 13. From then until now, he has played with bands on all ends of the rock and roll spectrum. His place in musical history is well earned, but you don’t have to take my word for it. His resume speaks for itself.

Beauvoir was a member of The Plasmatics, purveyors of the punk scene, with infamous frontwoman Wendy O. Williams. He went on to play with Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul, and became a frontman himself in the 80’s and 90’s for glam and electro rock bands (respectively), Voodoo X and Crown of Thorns, the band he is arguably most associated with to this day. Beauvoir is also a talented songwriter and producer. He has worked with numerous artists throughout the years, ranging everywhere from Kiss to NSYNC.

Crown of Thorns made a comeback within the last 5 years or so and Beauvoir still tours with the band. Following the tragic 2010 earthquake in Haiti, Jean (who is of Haitian descent) recorded a solo single called “I Keep Holding On”, the proceeds of which went to benefit the victims of the natural disaster.
