OUR BROTHER FROM ANOTHER PLANET: PITTSBURGH PUNKER BOBBY PORTER PASSES

Posted on November 2, 2010 at 6:30pm 10 Comments

Bobby Porter was the granddaddy of the Pittsburgh Punk scene and he was a long time friend of mine. He passed away last week from complications due to cancer.

A few things to set the record straight once and for all. Bobby was the baddest mother cruncher EVER to front a band in this area. Yes Bobby was OUR urban legend, our brother from another planet. He dared to be different. Bobby fronted the bands Otis and the Red Z, Thin White Line and Young Lust.…

Hey, thanx for the add and the info on Bobby. I'm from Chicago and, believe it or not, we heard about him all the way over in our scene during that first wave of punk in the 70s. My cousin was the one who told me about him -- and Pure Hell. I remember always having this good feeling that there were other Black punks out there staking a claim to the amazing energy that was happening and letting their voices be heard. Even at my young age I STILL had battles with Black peers who thought I was a freak for being into Patti Smith, Xray Spex, The Dead Boys, The Ramones and Pure Hell instead of Chic, Donna Summer, Linda Ronstadt, Frampton or any of the disco/pop and "Black radio" shit that was being shat out back then. I'm 43, but I got into punk early as a tween during that first wave that hit our city in the early/mid 70s thanks to my elder cousin, 2 stellar indie record stores and a sweet old queen who deejayed at our city's first punk club (La Mere Vipere) and also worked at my favorite indie record store (Sounds Good Records).

Wish I could've traveled up to pay my respects. I hope you all were able to come together and support each other, reminisce and celebrate him. We've lost so many great people this year, and fuckers like Dick "Darth" Cheney are still dancing around on his 13th heartattack and his 5th pacemaker. It's not fair. Take care and be well, brother. It's great to see you here on Afro-Punk x0x0x
