Intro from sometime in 2009:

People tell me I'm uplifting and quirky. I believe them, but that's only one piece of the story of me. I recently [It's been a while now since that dream. o.d.] had a dream that I shaved my head again. I woke up and looked in a mirror. I didn't. A few weeks [months] ago, I saw the film Waking Life. It made my cerebrum happy. Last year I went to Nigeria. It made my soul happy. It also made my lungs wince. Cars everywhere. Petrol everywhere. Okadas are motorcycle taxis that look like shiny motorized multi-colored ants. I saw mothers nonchalantly holding their babies while riding on the back of the okadas. The drivers rarely wore helmets. I was afraid of seeing a baby fly off the back of a motorcycle. It rained alot in Lagos and Warri. The weather was surprisingly cool. The people were surprisingly wealthy - two BMWs in the driveway wealthy. My family makes more sense to me now that I've been to my homeland: the religiosity, unabashed sexism, strong sense of abundance and community and ritual that is in the air they breathe. I make more sense to me.
You can be my friend if...
you live an inspired life.

Afropunk 2008: a Merch's-Eye View

Posted on July 15, 2008 at 6:00pm 2 Comments

So I kept notes of the good, the bad and the better throughout the entire 8 day festival. I was working the Afropunk merch table the whole time, which allowed me a great view of every concert. Applause to everyone who stopped by and supported AP! And I even send love to the folks who tried to weasel their way into a free t-shirt...a festival wouldn't be complete without y'all.

Now on to the music.

20 Things I Learned in or about Nigeria

Posted on June 17, 2008 at 12:36am 10 Comments

So I just visited my familial homeland of Nigeria for the first time in my adult life. It was quite the eye-opening experience and it gave me much to process.

Here's what I learned:

1. They have an unabashed relationship to money that I find refreshing. There didn't seem to be any taboo or secrecy or shame about money or lack thereof. In fact, when visitors come to people's houses, there's this elaborate ritual that culminates in the hosts giving the visitors money on a… Continue

Hey! Thanks for getting back! I was reading you 20 things about Nigeria blog and I thought point 13 was very interesting! it's funny cos i never quite got the western 'feminist' thing cos my mum, her sisters and many of cousins are all like that. they're not all market women but they are entrepreneurs and have BEEN 'running things'. Don't know what it's like out there but in London there's a lot of that happening in the last 5 years - where i live is close to peckham which many call 'little Nigeria'. `Anyway just thought i'd share.
peace
Yinka
PS - even with only seeing half your face you look VERY Nigerian!
