Melody Nelson are a doom blues power trio based in East London.
The group are the brain child of 21st century bluesman and Irish-Jamaican producer/ songwriter Aidan Connell who has established a resume, which has enabled him to share the stage and collaborate with Seasick Steve, Peter Doherty, Damo Suzuki (Can) and the newly reformed Mazzy Star. On the surface Aidan Connell is your archetypal ‘Black Rocker’ in the vein of Phil Lynott and Jimi Hendrix despite this he taps into rock'n'rolls deeper roots in black american music where larger than life characters like Bo Diddley, Dr John and Sun Ra were created by people with big imaginations and a flair for escapism, he comes across as someone who is forging blues from another dimension.
Other worldy blues and psychedelia set the tone for tales of death and mourning, and the incredible grief that comes with it. The music itself is raw, but it is the introduction of feedback, samples, sound effects and even analogue synthesizers to create a hypnotic collage that will send a shiver down your spine and instantly draw you in to share in these dark emotions.
After arousing much interest from various quarters a few years back Aidan experienced difficult times in his personal life with the death of a girlfriend a parent and a close friend all in a matter of months, these events inspired him to write much of the current repertoire under the guidance of songwriter/guitarist David Roback best known for forming Mazzy Star and also cult heroes The Rain Parade and Opal.
Leaving a broken home in the suburbs for London to work various jobs including modelling in with Kate Moss in a Revlon commercial and appearing in various publications including Esquire magazine. While backstage at a recent concert by shoegazers My Bloody Valentine, Aidan was introduced to songwriter/guitarist David Roback. Roback mentored and produced several demos for Aidan. The Roback /Connell penned and produced material went on to form the basis for Melody Nelson's live set and current recordings. Roback's dreamy psychedelia is evident along with a love of Nirvana, Arthur Lee's Love, Prince and Blues staples Son House, Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters .
Having experimented with various line-ups when Aidan recruited 22 year old former child actor Peter Jones (Drums) and and guitar collector Peter Bloom, whilst constructing his own recording studio complex in East London the now well known Goldmine studios .
Melody Nelson have played throughout the UK and have toured in France, Italy and Scandinavia, already esteemed within musicians circles, Aidan Connell is one of the many black musicians in rock’n’roll who are resurrecting the blues today. the most exciting thing about Melody Nelson is that they could steer in any—or perhaps every direction.
