being a black man in america...isn't easy. the hunt is on and you're the prey
the quote that opens Rebelmatic's album Prey for the Vulture sounds like a sample of a lecture or sermon- delivered with the force and conviction of someone who has lived it's truth. Try as you might to complicate, deny, or problematize those words they hang in the sonic atmosphere, floating in the back of your mind like the weight of history, real as a ghost caught in a snapshot.. and he's telling you these things because he loves you and he wants you to survive. Rebelmatic is telling you something too-reminding you that there's an urgent NEED for good new sound in this era of musical surrender and minstrelsy. And they aim to show you by loud example.
Preacher said: be quiet you gonna get both of us kil't
Back to that album title- does acknowledging the fact that YOU are the prey (and feel free to include any number of realities of birth or choices that exclude you from the mythical melting pot of homogenized buttermilk) place you in the role of perpetual victim or does it, in fact, provide you with a way to speak truth to all? and what does all of this have to do with music?
for the answers, let's evoke some of our glorious past:
Sly Stone
miriam makeba
jimi hendrix
nina simone
roberta flack

lee scratch perry
nona hendryx

public enemy
and that aint all....
only a short list of associations that come to mind after the 4th (or 50th- dare you to put the record down) listen to Rebelmatic. And then you put all those ancestors back in their reverent places and really LISTEN to THIS BAND. "Wow,- they sound exactly like...no one else". Rebelmatic refuses to make ordinary shit, let alone derivative shit. Hearing them live on stage is a journey-a trip- first you're caught up in the breeze of creature's seriously dark comic intro as the band revs up to speed-a perfectly respectable melody suddenly transforms into a monster hook as alcatraz' guitar coolly shreds notes while o's bass races sticks' drums to the seismic center of the earth- all this behind creature's unstoppable barrage of word sound power.
like all artists concerned with what we'll call reality- rebelmatic aims to destroy that berlin/gaza wall that separates the experience of art from the experience of anything else. Creature's witty and socially provocative lyrical collages have a momentum and propulsion that catches you by surprise- just when he seems to have applied his staccato delivery to another topic he brings his far-ranging metaphors back into sharp focus with one line.
Four brothers making a joyfull noise unto heaven-hell yeah-but also teaching you how to diy in no uncertain terms.
Motherfuckers i'm buzzing- you lames can't ignore us
do.it.yourself- the ethic of just pick it up-start!-(picking up some craft along the way is nice but not a requirement). not a hobby or trend or pose on the way to the majors-no no no's. When the goal is clearly defined: to live a life where your art sustains you and lets you create and share it without the sort of compromises that make it hard to look at yourself in the a.m.-that's when those three letters convey less lifestyle and more way of life. Rebematic can lay claim to the name because they play the way they live: to diy.
get up and go!
