Hello, my name is Rochelle. I first got into punk and metal back in 1994, and I've been into it ever since. It has been quite an interesting time!
Right now, I'm in my last year of art school. I'm graduating in May 2012. Outside of school, I spray paint skateboard decks, sketch, do wood burning, make stencils and stickers, fold origami (mostly three dimensional stuff and modular), and make zines. My zine, "Impossibles", is a perzine about things in our culture that are hidden from view. I am currently working on issue four right now.
You can be my friend if...
you are kind, compassionate, aren't afraid to show you're smart, and aren't a follower.
I have way too many favorite bands to even begin to list here. My Zune has about 2500 songs from about thirty different genres. As for punky stuff, which takes up most of my collection with all the different sub-genres, my favorites are anarcho-punk, folk punk, post-punk (early 80s goth stuff goes here), hardcore, crust, and d-beat. I also like metal and industrial.
I love going to concerts and festivals. So far, I've seen Peter Murphy, Bauhaus, Dismantled, Combichrist, The Genitorturers, Chiodos, Darkest Hour, Atreyu, The Architects UK, The Toasters, Fishbone, MC Chris, Whole Wheat Bread, Weird Al Yankovic and many more.
Favorite movies:
I love film noir, foreign films, and B-grade sci-fi and horror. I've seen so many old movies that I love that it would take way too long to name them all- I didn't even keep track of all of the names, either. ^_^
Favorite books:
I read constantly- I read maybe two or three different books a month in addition to magazines, other publications, things I have no business reading...hell, even nutrition labels! I've had seven or eight different library cards in my lifetime and I am still a regular at our town library. My favorite genre of writing is non-fiction. I love reading popular science books, sociology, history (especially if it has to do with minorities), astronomy and botanical field guides, art history, radical political theory, and humanist/ atheist topics. I guess the easiest way to answer this question would be to make a small list of books that have influenced my life direction one way or the other through the years.
"The Feminine Mystique" by Betty Friedan; "A Wrinkle In Time" by Madeline L'Engle; "Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers" by Mary Roach; "Anarchism and other essays" by Emma Goldman; "Making Stuff and Doing Things" (compiled) by Kyle Bravo; "Defying Dixie: The Radical Roots of Civil Rights:1919-1950" by Glenda Gilmore.
There are two books that I got into in my early childhood that deserve a special mention here. I spent hours pouring over my grandmother's copy of "The Magic and Medicine of Plants"- still to this day, I have a deep interest in botany. Also, I've had many astronomy books over the years that were just meant for occasional coffee table browsing, but I enjoyed them so much then and now that they literally fall apart from me reading them so much!
Favorite Magazines:
I read the New Scientist every week. Another few favorites of mine are the Skeptical Inquirer, Auxiliary, and the Gothic Beauty.
I love reading zines-my favorites are Impact Press (r.i.p.), Slingshot, The Slug and Lettuce ( also r.i.p.), Doris, On Subbing, Dream Whip, and Applicant.
If any of you guys have zines you want me to read, send me a link. I will gladly buy them from you!
Favorite TV shows:
Downtown no Gaki No Tsukai ya Arehende! Modern Marvels, How It's Made, Animal Hoarders, Antiques Roadshow.
Well, i had a similar situation growing up myself - maybe not quite as severe. I feel for what you're going through, though. Just keep your head up. Shit will be alright if you make it so.
Thank you for the lovely comment! I love the whole corporate goth look. Thank you for accepting my friend request. I am glad Bauhaus makes you think of me. I would love to hear more about your experience as a black women who is Goth and interested in the Goth culture.
