In a pool of artists where bragging about cars, houses, jets, jewelry and women is the norm, SoSoon stands out as an artist who bridges the gap between the haves and the have not’s. SoSoon (an acronym for the Sound of Something Out of Nothing) is an emcee and songwriter who is the self proclaimed “Spike Lee of Hip Hop”. With comparisons to J. Cole, Lupe Fiasco and the early Kanye West, the Jamaica Queens native (born James Gantt) is bound to break barriers.
In addition to being an artist SoSoon is developing a diverse brand that is reflective of what he calls “The Nieuw New Yorke”. The multifaceted artist conceptualized this new way of thinking after noticing a decline in the presence and lack of innovation from New York artist in mainstream Hip Hop. Not only is SoSoon a product of Hip Hop culture and its birth-place, having studied Africana and Latino Studies at CUNY Hunter College; he has a thorough understanding of the art form.
Permeating the underground Hip Hop scene, SoSoon has performed at some of New York City’s most popular venues such as SOB’s, Public Assembly, Southpaw, Santos Party House and Sapphire Lounge where his group MI-6 (Music Innovators) hosts “The Foundation Limelight” weekly Hip Hop showcase. Besides gracing multiple stages in The Big Apple he has also performed in states such as Vermont, Connecticut, DMV; opening up for artists such as M.O.P, Dead Prez, Saigon, Bazaar Royale and Game Rebellion.
His witty lyricism, storytelling capabilities and stage presence has caught the attention of media outlets such as The Source, SOHH.com and Legends Radio. "SoSoon harkens us back to the era of Gil Scott Heron and Curtis Mayfield where quality music was also socially relevant," said Evan Ginsburg of Legends Radio.
Proving he’s more than a Hip Hop artist, SoSoon has ventured into the world of television. The emcee has recently wrapped the 1st season of “The Urban View” as a co-host alongside rapper MIZZP. The show, which covers politics, entertainment gossip and more airs every Tuesday from 7-9pm on www.urbanmediatv.com.
