Sunny Gang
About Me
Sunny Gang is a rock/rap band from Newark, NJ. The band humbly began when Nasty Nate (vocals) and Party Marsh (drums) met in 2010 on Rutgers Universityʼs Newark campus, becoming friends through a mutual interest in non-curricular activities. Over the course of the next year the pair met Joe Sap (bass) at a mutual friendʼs house and Chris Bacchus (guitar) during freshmen move-in day. Shortly after their chance meeting, Marsh approached Bacchus, along with Nate, asking him if he had an interest in starting a band on campus. Despite Bacchusʼ belief that Party Marsh was a 30-year-old weirdo, he agreed to try out a jam session with the two. A few weeks later the three recorded a rough demo of what would become Sunny Gangʼs first official song, creatively titled Jack & Blunts, in Party Marshʼs makeshift dorm room studio.

Soon after the recording, Joe Sap ran into Nasty Nate and Party Marsh on campus and invited them to come record some tracks at Rutgers-Newarkʼs RetroVista studios, where Joe was working as an intern. This one-off recording session quickly turned into a semester-long project. By late April 2012, Nasty Nateʼs first solo project, Self- Medication, was released on SoundCloud. During those sessions, a new recording of Jack & Blunts was tracked, featuring Chris on guitar and Joe on bass. Liking what they heard, the four began jamming together, working out live accompaniments for tracks from Self-Medication. After a few months of jamming and performing together, Sunny Gang wrote itʼs first song together as a band, “Bloc Party.” The group quickly realized that they shared a number of musical influences across a wide variety of genres, ranging from the hard hitting riffs of bands like Rage Against the Machine, the crowd-moving grooves of 60s-era funk like Sly and the Family Stone, the irreverence of trap rappers like Gucci Mane, and the genre-bending abilities and topical awareness of The Roots. All of these elements began to work themselves into Sunny Gang's music, creating a truly unique sound that is as reminiscent of the past as it is representative of the future.

After a summer of playing shows and writing new material, Sunny Gang released their first EP, entitled Cʼmon Sun! It was around this time that the Gang began catching the attention of some local artists and venues and members of the Downtown Newark arts scene. During the Fall of 2012 Sunny Gang performed at venues such as The Coffee Cave in Newark, NJ, The Stone Pony in Asbury Park, NJ, Newark Bears Stadium for a series of shows in conjunction with their “Stadium of Screams” Halloween carnival, Bar East in Manhattan and on campus at Rutgers-Newark.

Once Sunny Gang began to cement their status as a working band in the New Jersey music scene, bigger opportunities began to present themselves to the band. Since Winter 2012, Sunny Gang has opened for well-known touring acts like The English Beat and Shinobi Ninja. Sunny Gang has also opened for the up and coming act Air Dubai at The Studio at Webster Hall and most recently performed at AfroPunk Fest 2013. Currently the band is working on their first full-length release, and are preparing for a summer full of performances.
