Black Nerds, don't change yourselves for the approval of your peers

On Sunday night, I ran into a viral video on Facebook of a young black boy singing the lyrics to a Drake song to a girl. Based off the girl’s body language she tries not to pay him any attention in hopes that he would go away. For black nerds, this is a common response we get in grade school. I have seen it firsthand of how black nerds suffer mentally with rejection and turn to misogynists who dislike black women. When I was in high school, my English teacher and a couple cheerleaders told me…See More

Peaches Monroee coined the phrase "on fleek" but received none of the profit, now launching cosmetic line

Like 97 percent of all the great things in the American pop-culture lexicon, AAEV determines the words and phrases that flavor our language, so to speak. But rarely do we source and acknowledge the people who invent and/or repurpose words to reflect the times. Peaches Monroe, who coined the phrase/word "Eyebrows on Fleek, hasn’t made a dime from the commercial use of her phrase, but was still inspired by its viral success…See More

Hidden Figures: John Horse, Osceola & the Black Seminoles led the largest slave rebellion in U.S. History

Posted on February 23, 2017 at 1:30pm 0 Comments

In the early 1800s, then General Andrew Jackson ordered for the destruction of a fort that had become a refuge and symbol of hope for runaway slaves. The fort was the epicenter of a newly freed slave community and was growing and thriving at the time, and the fort was…
