so it all started with a boy...

...and I think about how that sounds, but......meh.

A few months ago, I started hanging out with this boy, and sometimes when we were together we'd need to purchase something.

OK, cool... another excuse for fun together times.

Except we would get there, any where, any store, and it was almost always a mini ordeal.

See dude didn't buy plastic. He didn't buy anything wrapped in or attached to plastic.

Just imagine how limiting that was!!??

Next time you're in a store look at everything. I dare you to find 10 things without any plastic.

After making our purchases the person behind the counter would often try to put them in a plastic bag. My dude friend would politely refuse the bag. This sometimes started up a conversation, which almost inevitably prompted the person behind the counter to say something about it -obviously- but more often than not it was negative, about "the futility...blah blah blah...this is the way life is...blah," which could be their own guilt, feeling judged or whatnot, not important, but being the 10 year old younger brother that I can sometimes be, I would often side with the stranger teasing this boy that was slowly becoming my partner.

So, I thought about it, and decided to take the challenge. Solidarity.

That was 101 days ago...huh

The first thing that I realized was that I was going to have to learn to make bread, or stop eatting it altogether, and I'm addicted.

So I called up another one of my friends, cause he makes a lot of bread to see what I could learn. Not much actually. We made bread and it was yummy, but that was the last time, and sometimes learning requires repetition.

I've since found places that sell me bread in paper bags, but that original phone call to my bread making friend blew the shit out of the ball that was already rolling.

I've now made laundry detergent, deodorant, granola, gummi worms, propagated sage, made plant hormones and found so many alternative and plastic free ways to keep me clean, feed and happy.

OK so.....I did have a plastic binge a few weeks ago. I lost patience and had a little bit of a tantrum. There is so much reconnaissance that needs to happen with non plastic living, so much planning, learning, doing and I wanted something and I wanted it NOW!

Imagine being hungry, emotional, accustomed to instant gratification, standing in the middle of a store and everything is wrapped in plastic.

F@#$%^&*#@&$*%^.....K!!!

I gorged myself on packaged food, cigarettes, chips, gummi bears, chocolate..........etc. Ahhh, it was delicious, comforting, pacifying and toxic....

In 101 days, I've eaten more fresh food, and less preservatives, not contributed to the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, learned a shit ton, become more self-sufficient and can no longer buy cigarettes.

I'm reskilling myself. 101 days, and counting.

To celebrate, last night, I decided to try making rice milk.

(I boiled 8 parts water to 1 part uncooked rice for 3 hours, blended then strained twice)

It was thicker than I am used to, and kind of starchy, so will tweak that a bit, but I'm on the road, and I like it here.

AND it comes with a really cute boy. Sweet!!!! ;D
