In response to teenage promiscuity, momowilly penned the classic poem It's the Real (AIDS and Babies) and received critical and national acclaim when she won the McGill Poetry Award in January 2007. In April 2007, after performing the year before, she was asked to host two events at the Pan-African Bookfest in Ft. Lauderdale. In September 2007, she contributed to Motown Pride's benefit CD "Justice for the Jena 6" with her solo track The Jena 6 Catalyst to raise money for the legal fund of those victims of social injustice. momowilly opened for many notable acts including Sparrow, performing I Just Found Out I Was Black at the Caribbean American Festival in Miramar, Florida June 2009. In August 2009, the internet sensation released her well-celebrated poems discussing socio-political issues, self-esteem, and relationships entitled The momowilly Experience. NY Times Best-Selling Author Omar Tyree called the collection "...all original content and delivery right up in your face, whether you like it or not."
In 2009, she co-produced a radio show with an old school rapper that was designed to promote active activism, but creative differences caused her to reevaluate her involvement. momowilly used this opportunity to branch out on her own, producing and hosting a show called "The Experience with momowilly." Past guests include Omar Tyree, famed hiphop journalist Davey D, the legendary MC Lyte, humanitarian Paradise Gray, and Pittsburgh's biggest underground artist Jasiri X. This entertaining online radio show focuses on community involvement, highlighting activists, while providing a platform for conscious emcees and spoken word artists. Currently on hiatus, the show is returning May 13 "bigger, badder, and Blacker than ever." Submissions are always welcome for airplay consideration.
In efforts to further encourage love for self, she has an online show called "The Wonderful World of MoMo Willy" that chronicles her own "journey through Blackness," her personal growth, and moving past bad habits into good. Viewers are privy to her travels from NYC to ATL to FTL, from sushi eating to a ban on peanuts, hunting for melanin DVDs, and behind the scenes musings of her poetry performances. The entire series is available on momowilly's Youtube, but viewers can catch some episodes featured on MoMoTV, the livestream channel that airs videos from mainstream and underground emcees, documentaries, as well as some humorous skits.
momowilly knows what it's like to be searching for knowledge of self and works hard to help others on their journey in as many ways as she can. She is releasing a book of her philosophical adages and affirmations summer 2010 entitled "Mo'losophy" and is consistently working on remedies to combat the negative images in black cinema, television, and comics.
