About Me
This page is a forum that has been inspired by a body of academic work that I compiled for my MA exploring the early years of hiphop and punk and their relationship through to the 80s post-punk/new wave era in New York's downtown art scene. It's located at www.twosevens.net

I hope that you'll take the time to read it and share your knowledge on the subject. Look forward to the many great contributions that I know you will all bring!
You can be my friend if...
Since this is about (but not only) music I'll start off with that and build from there. Genres that have influenced my tastes are many including but not exclusively any trashy proto-punk that predates anything done in '76 and beyond. I.e. Iggy and the Stooges, or anything before then i.e. the Yardbirds or the Sonics, first generation London and NY punk (I'm not a big fan of mid-to late 80s American hardcore (it's too tight and well rehearsed for my taste, in other words, the musicians are too talented!) I like -- the Germs (and the rest of the 80s L.A. punk scene), the Germs are so baadass they're good, and I appreciate that) (maybe I've redeemed myself in the eyes of you hardcore fans out there, lol) The the slower (Or fast and sloppy) and sloppier, the better for me, Sorry!) New wave post-punk, old school and electro- hiphop, pop - hiphop - dance - rock. I could go back further but then that would be a history lesson so keeping it simple, yeah, there's some stuff.

Favorite bands:
"They were the first band to really embrace that cross-cultural revolution. They brought reggae to rockfans...it was the same with hip-hop. I don't think the Beastie Boys would have been into hip-hop if it wasn't for the Clash."
--RIck Rubin on the Clash
Favorite movies:
I've given up on saying which are my favorite movies (and favorite things in general) because with me that's always changing. Blame in on my ADD/ADHD.
Favorite TV shows:
Not overly moved by any show at the moment. My old stand bys are all the CSIs, Degrassi, Law and Order and I have a morbid curiosity over Dexter.

Oh wait, yeah, Clone High has impacted my life forever more...

The Legacy of Punk and Hiphop 1979 -1985

New York City has an almost larger-than-life relation to the rest of the world where it is often perceived as being a major centre. New York is comprised of landmarks and symbols, from the Statue of Liberty, to Times Square to the notoriety of the boroughs themselves. New York’s status as a centre and the way it is talked about suggests the importance of place. This period in time became immortalized in history by the Clash, Future 2000, Afrika Bambaataa, John Lydon, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Glen… Continue
