Actually I did, and that's what I found out. That creole means fugitive, or runaway or those that live on the mountaintop. I knew what Maroons were, I thought they were the indigenous peoples or Arawaks. But when I was doing my reasearch I found out the meaning, and it means the same both in Suriame and in the West Indies. It's funny though, mad Jamaicans like my husband swear that claiming Maroon means claiming Indian. I told him before, all your doing is clamining the Arican twice! But my grandmother is a creole from Louisiana, but she is not black and white, she black, and Chinese. She put my aunts on to the history, who put my cousins on, who put me on. I want to do this DNA test cause I have a strong feeling there was a Chinese person somewhere in there. The part of Louisiana my grandmother comes from had a high population of Chinese men married to Africans from the end of slavery to the beginning of the 1900's according to the Census data.
