GOTH. The Aesthetic and The Subculture: Getting Past the Stupid Shit.
A while back I went through an ugly experience as a result of joining a goth chat line. To begin with, I was new to a conscious identification with the subculture and new to chat lines too, so I had some hurdles to jump. I didn't expect I'd have to jump them in a mine field though. The worst of it: Three attacks were made on my computer (files stolen, virus planted, I lost a lot of stuff). This whole experience was my first encounter with goth as a subculture. I didn't expect the… Continue

Black Pole Revisits Generation X Alternative Rock - INTERVIEW
Alternative music in the early ‘90s arguably had the biggest impact on American pop culture since the Baby Boomer generation. It was an exciting time when the Do It Yourself aesthetics of the punk generation 20 years prior helped inspire hungry artists and musicians to express themselves without restraint. Within Generation X were many independent local bands that gained popularity at home, but failed to attain a larger audience. Out of the historically turbulent Berkeley, CA… Continue

Rockstar In Training: Musicians of the Roundtable
This past week I facilitated and participated in the first of several free Musician’s Roundtables at the University of Louisville. There were fewer than 13 knights… I mean, musicians, in attendance, but some of them were my friends & internet acquaintances. Among others, attendees included, Lady “Jessy B”, a rapper of a unique cloth, Sir Maxwell Mitchell of ye olden and Sir Justin Lewis, the first of his name and master of going to Bonaroo for free. Oh, and I, Lady Pam Newman,… Continue

George Clinton: The King of Funk
George Clinton's name is synonymous with funk. The mastermind behind the supergroup Parliament-Funkadelic (now known as the P-Funk All Stars), Clinton released 19 albums from 1970 and 1981 that defined funk and kickstarted the Afrofuturist movement. In a career that's spanned over 50 years, he's influenced everything from NWA to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, from Fishbone to the Big Boys, and been sampled by nearly every hip hop artist in the history of the… Continue

Bad Brains' HR Getting The Documentary Treatment
In case you missed this, here's another documentary you punkz and punkettez need to look out for: HR, The Documentary, produced by Small Axe Films. The movie will document the life of icon and Bad Brains front man HR, from the hard-hitting and aggressive punk era to the more mellow, but still eccentric recent days. Very little footage has been released so far and we don't know when the final product will be available (the… Continue

Ask Black Witch
It’s the first 'Ask Black Witch' of the second year of Black Witch. How delightful! Side note: soon I’ll probably be grinding for votes for the Black Web Awards (different from the Black Weblogs Awards). Geez, I feel like I’m running for president. On to our first question: "Why is divination so bad?" - AnonymousAdded by The Establishment on June 24, 2011 at 1:30pm — 6 Comments
Ask Black Witch
It’s the first Ask Black Witch of the second year of Black Witch. How delightful! I’m also happy because no more grinding for votes and donations to send me to L.A. for the Black Weblog Awards. No, sadly I didn’t make the goal of $500, close but not good enough. I’m currently in talks with BWA and Afro-Punk about all this to see what still can be done. Yes, I really would like to go but circumstances are circumstances.
But note: Soon I’ll probably be grinding for votes for the Black…

We've seen a lot around here, but this guy is definitely trying something different.
