NEFPREZ PRESENTS: "I AM OTHER"-- A film on being the the righteous outcast
Written by: Alexandria Gamlin
Feeling isolated for simply choosing to be yourself is rough. What's with getting a side-eye for dressing in too many patterns? If you've taken a snicker for too many pierced holes in your face, and grandma won't return your calls…

#SoundCheck: Canadian alt-rockers The Dears leak tracks from their new live Album/Docu, 'Never Destroy Us'
The Dears' new live album (their fourth) was recorded at the Pasaguero nightclub in Mexico City. If the leaked unmixed songs are any indication, the full set will draw heavily from their 2011 release Degeneration Street. The long-running band is tight as ever, with a touch of indie jangle, you know, to keep it authentic. Like their previous live records, they play around with their own songs, stretching Degeneration Street's lead single “Omega Dog” through waves of feedback and…

The King of the Twelve String: Lead Belly
With his 100th birthday, and the let's-not-call-it-a-depression-because-that's-depressing “economic downturn” there's been a renewed interest in the music of folk legend Woody Guthrie this past year. But hardly anyone's talking about one of Guthrie's biggest influences and collaborators, Huddie Ledbetter. Better known to the world as that original punk rocker Lead Belly.

"The Stand-In"
Today, I decided to take a big risk. Being a songwriter, I was trying to figure out how I can store my lyrics till I get a chance to perform them. Due to anxiety and awareness of my feeble voice, I decided to just put the lyrics up. Hopefully, this can earn me some songwriting jobs. :-)
Anyway, when I wrote this, I was thiking of the many shallow ways people seem to write about love. To me, it's not enough to just write how much you love them. What would you like to do with them? What…

Sugar & Spikes Tattoo Feature: Doxi Jones - Unashamed
With her mysterious viral videos, we see a glimpse of Doxi Jones, but not the whole picture. She teases us with images of her eyes and lips, discussing her thoughts and pulls us into an intimate one-way conversation. A marketing idea she proudly proclaims as her own. While sitting down with the Title 9/SRC/Universal Republic recording artist at a studio in Manhattan, I am immediately thrilled to see not only is Doxi stunning but she has some beautiful skin ink. I wondered at…

#SoundCheck The ever ambitious Phony Ppl are back already with 2nd 2012 release 'nothinG Special' (Free Download)
The sprawling 9 piece hip-hop collective Phony Ppl are nothing if not ambitious. Barely 7 months after their debut LP, their new EP nothinG Special cements their status as one of the most exciting new acts of 2012. The band moves effortlessly between sampled, sequenced and full band; switching genres and sound on a dime. Anchored by one of the tightest rhythm sections in the game, the EP is a slice of retro hip-hop, soul, and disco. But unlike many the many groups who…

Black Witch - "Trolololo-She Rachet". Is Wicca Just For White Folks?
So, there’s been something recent occurring in the online Pagan community. There was a rehash on Pagan.about.com about minority Pagan bloggers and of course, some commenter named Silvia felt mighty brave in her Whiteness and cried tears about how Wicca should be left to the White folks. Everyone, please witness this demonstration of why saying “Post-Racial America” is a long way…

Black Fashion By Javii: The Bow Tie
Fashion trends are like friends. They come and go with the season, sometimes for no apparent reason. Some friends you hang out with because they hang out with all your other friends. Some friends, no matter how popular, quirky, witty or cute they are, they're not friend you keep around forever. Friends: Trend: The Bow Tie.…

Um, About Emo's Place in Punk...
I was going to save this one for tomorrow, but I thought I'd write this now. It's the type of blog that will lead people to say "duh", so if this seems obvious to you, I'd run along elsewhere.
Now, being a person who had my music called "emo", in a positive way, by a fellow afro-punk ex, it took me a while to wonder exactly why people, punks included, spit at emo kids. I thought that it may only be the fashion, but otherwise, people know that it fits snuggly into punk. For those who…

Help Me Understand Something
While searching to see if Kimya Dawson's work is in here, I recently came across a post that asked who is into real punk music. Then she said "there is a difference between alternative and punk". While that is true, I wound up doing two things: 1) I bemoaned the fact that the discussion board was closed, 2) I started to question what she considered actual punk. (Update: I assume that what she meant was that when Afro-Punk was made, she thought there was going to be a focus on punk rock only…
