Black Witch: The Arts, featuring Nastassia, Lupe, and much more!

Here comes another round of The Arts! I hope you enjoyed the last one. Now we did completely music for The Arts but I wanna make sure everyone understands I’m doing all the arts. If it’s creative, it’s up here. I couldn’t modify the post for Artscape, a festival that’s every summer in Baltimore celebrating all the arts (except for the literary arts), for last month because The Arts posts are fairly…

Dr. Laura’s Disease: Edgy White Person Syndrome

White people saying “nigger.” That’s always pleasant right? Saying “nigger” eleven times with head held high? Feels more like a massage. A really racist massage. In this week’s episode, follow comedian Elon James White's journey into the twisted, entitled mind of America’s favorite repressed, gay-bashing, antifeminist “radio therapist,” Dr. Laura. And what we find is a disease I like to call E.W.P.S., or Edgy White Person Syndrome. And even though Dr. Laura is already slinking…

Tattoo of the week: Raven Supreme

This week we are featuring a Canadian 20-year-old artist, Raven Supreme. She only has three tattoos, but they don't go unnoticed with the unique placements of all three. Our favorite is the little Ms. Packman she has tucked away on her neck, but the birds calf tattoo she sports is pretty dope as well. Thanks Ms. Raven for submitting your ink, very nice work. Don't forget to submit your tattoos to whitney@afropunk.com to…

Tired of the trends, Afro-punk member creates own line

It was excruciatingly hot and I had under an hour to get to East Williamsburg to meet up with fashion designer, Maat Oguntunde. The L train took forever to arrive and even longer to get there, after all it was a Saturday afternoon. Blackberry clutched in my right hand, messenger bag strapped over my shoulder stuffed with junk, and sunglasses sliding down my nose from sweat I rushed out the Morgan Avenue train…

Video: Tricky's Murder Weapon

King of trip-hop Tricky is back with 'Murder Weapon', the new single off his upcoming album 'Mixed Race' (to be released in September on Domino Records). The video, in which the artist stars as a boxer, is a pretty dark mini-movie directed by French graphic-designers-turned-directors Fleur & Manu. The single (featuring vocalist Franky Riley) is a reworking of the 90's… Continue

VV Brown's Comic Book Series & Live Album + Video

If being a new-age doo-wop sensation wasn't enough, our girl from the UK VV Brown also co-wrote a comic book series, The City Of Abacus. The official press release explains: "Constantly numbed down by reality TV shows and the obsession of celebrity culture, we slowly loose our freedom of choice and thought. The comic expresses these feelings and thoughts through a fantasy world… Continue

More than JUST A BAND

A special thanks goes out to Rob Fields of the Bold As Love blog for putting me on to this group. Just a band is not just your average band they are surfers of the nu-wave of African musical tide. Bore out the mind of three college friends from Kenya this group has taken their mixture of pop/electro and soul to the mainstream via youtube posting…

Punk rock fans, this one's for you! We've heard some of you say that they would like to see more traditional punk rock on afropunk.com, and we would like to know which bands you would like us to cover. Although we believe "punk" is more about a state of mind than about a particular music genre, we love punk rock and we want to know about the punk bands you like. We're trying our best to monitor a bunch of them, especially… Continue

A Stop: With The Bots

Just when you think punk rock has become nothing more than cookie cutter pretty boys who love to whine and wear skinny jeans, a band like The Bots comes along and reminds you of how daring, bold and fun the genre can truly be. Seventeen year old Mikaiah Lei plays guitar and sings and his brother, thirteen year old Anaiah Lei plays the drums. Don’t let their ages fool you. The Bots are loud, aggressive and they…

What does it mean to “look African?"

I didn’t know I was African until I left Africa. A loaded statement coming from a Nigerian; an Igbo girl. Nonetheless, it is exactly the way I used to feel, before my family relocated back to the States from Nigeria. Before I left the confines of my father country, declaring me an African person was redundant- a statement of the obvious – so I never had to consciously think about it. In Nigeria, particularly in my Igbo culture, my father’s name and my education were the two…

Fighting Youth Homelessness, One Show at a Time

When James Beary was 19, he found himself sleeping on the train. His mom lost her job right after 9/11 and struggled to keep the family afloat. Energetic, full of stories and smiles, James does not fit the typical mold that most people think when they hear the word "homeless." He says his situation can happen to anyone at any age. James said while being without a place to call home, he would go to music shows and stayed…
