Happy Malcolm X Day! We Got 5 Songs to Celebrate His Legacy. #SoundCheck

Yesterday, May 19th was Malcolm X's birthday. Had he not been gunned down at age 39, Malcolm would have been 88 this weekend. Despite being often mentioned in the same breath as Dr. King, it doesn't seem likely we'll see a nationally recognized Malcolm X Day in the US any time soon. The firebrand Civil Rights leader's legacy is still being dissected even among his admirers, and probably will be for a long time. So in honor of his immeasurable impact on Civil Rights, Black…

Marques Toliver's 'Land of CanAan' is straight up one of the best R&B records of recent years. Stream it here! #SoundCheck

R&B and soul took a dark turn when synths got good enough to almost realistically replicate the sound of a full orchestra in the late 80's. A sound more or less defined by raw human emotion and lush (AKA expensive) arrangements traded a big chunk of it's human element in exchange for “sure that sounds enough like a violin and just saved us a few hundred bucks in session fees!” So it's encouraging to see the triumphant return of the orchestra in R&B. The latest in this…

True Religion

What's new? How do I feel? How I feel? This means more to me than I have ever let you know or will ever say because words can never describe. There is no beat that's raw enough, No flow that’s Pure enough, no mic that's clear enough to effectively express what I’m doing. "It’s not about drums, drugs, and hospital drips, oh no. There's more there than that, my friend. We all like a bit of the good life - some the money, some the drugs, others the sex game, the glamour, or the fame" But this…

I Think I'm Andrew W.K.

It's been a long time, but it turns out I've been inspired to take a short detour into rap. Why?

Early last month, someone tweeted "I Think I'm Andrew W.K." The man who shares such namesake retweeted it. I suddenly started thinking about how political rapper Sole would perform raps like "I Think I'm Noam Chomsky" or "I Think I'm Emma Goldman". This gave me the idea that someone like Sole should rap that, but it seemed least likely since politics was more his forte. Then, the same dude…

American Fangs' Debut Full Length is Finally Out Now! It Was Worth the Wait! #SoundCheck

It's maybe weird to call yourself a fan of a band after only hearing one track, but that's how it went with American Fangs. The first time I heard “Le Kick” on the Afropunk Vol 2 comp I was hooked. I hunted for their album. But no luck. Since 2009 they've released a few singles and an EP and a WWE theme song because why the hell not?…

BOOTS

1490

I have been looking for a pair of boots that look like Dr. Martens but I really don't want to spend that much money. I love the look of these boots they look so militant and in your face and I think that they are amazing. Everywhere I look online I see boots that look like them such as grinders... but like I said I would hate to spend over a a hundred dollars on them any one who reads this I hope you could help me. and oxblood are the best color for…
