Explosion of Colors & Prints: Bombe Surprise
Hey! I am Ms. K and I am living in Brooklyn, NY. I grew up in Germany with a German mum and a Ghanaian dad. African cloth and prints were always part of our home and my life. Today we'll be talking about Bombe Surprise, a label from London. The collection and designs are inspired by the wax prints that designer Nina Ribena saw at one of London's many markets and the multicultural vibe of the city itself. Even though some of the designs might be a little too crazy for myself, I…

New York African Film Festival - Five Movies To Watch Out For
The 19th Annual New York African Film Festival launched April 11 at Lincoln Center, and this year’s batch of movies are as inspiring as they are entertaining. In recent years, there has been more and more discussion about the plight of diasporic filmmakers and what to do about the lack of opportunity and representation that black people face in Hollywood. Luckily, the AFF this year is proving yet again that there are strides being made all over (take the…

GOTH. The Aesthetic and The Subculture: Getting Past the Stupid Shit.
A while back I went through an ugly experience as a result of joining a goth chat line. To begin with, I was new to a conscious identification with the subculture and new to chat lines too, so I had some hurdles to jump. I didn't expect I'd have to jump them in a mine field though. The worst of it: Three attacks were made on my computer (files stolen, virus planted, I lost a lot of stuff). This whole experience was my first encounter with goth as a subculture. I didn't expect the… Continue

Mental Health Disorders in The Black Community: Let's Break The Taboo
I'm a psych major and also suffer from a personality disorder (it's called Borderline Personality Disorder, for those wanting to know or to look it up). I wanted to start this conversation because through personal experience and from my studies I have learned that many African Americans suffer from mental health disorders, but are less likely to get treatment and help for themselves. Is it… Continue
