Black History Month: Spotlight on Chuck Treece of McRad, Skatepunk Pioneer #SoundCheck

Though orthodoxy holds that skatepunk originated on the West Coast, pro skater and multi-instrumentalist Chuck Treece was making the world safe for melodic hardcore in Philly during the mid-80's. As the leader of the band McRad, Treece was a part of the movement to inject punk rock with reggae, funk, and metal influences. McRad's 1987 full length Absence of Sanity is these days best remembered for the tracks it contributed to the legendary skate video “Public Domain.” But the…

Black Rock in Seattle and 'The Fuck You Factor'

Greetings All,

I haven't posted at all since a few months ago but I would like to make this my official hello.

Not sure if you're aware of this, but US President Barack Obama proclaimed June 2011 'Black Music History Month', and even mentioned rock in the official proclamation: "The artistic depth of soul, rock and roll, and hip-hop not only bring together people across our Nation, but also energize and shape the creativity of artists around the world", it reads. In honor of this, popular/mainstream Black news website… Continue

My Chucks are starting to talk

I have had My Chuck Taylor All Stars, since I was 13 years old. Why they still fit is a long story. We were severly poor growing up so my mom used to make us buy shoes in the event we would someday sprout into giants. Anyway, I have had my chucks for 10 years now. They are dirty, worn, and now beginning to talk (meaning the bottom flaps when I walk). I certainly can buy another pair, but this pair has gotten me through puberty, overdoses, fights, drunken nights, fatal attractions, bad breakups… Continue
