Kids In Show Business: Yay Or Nay?

Everyone's understandably mad about satirical paper The Onion calling child actress Quvenzhané Wallis a cunt in their (now deleted) Tweet.

Which brought us to another question: Is a small child's place in ego-driven Hollywood (or any type of…

The Problem With 'Django Unchained': Why Tarantino’s Latest Film Does Nothing for Race in Hollywood

With new film stills revealed and a trailer probably not far off either, the buzz around Quentin Tarantino’s highly anticipated ninth studio film Django Unchained is beginning to reach dizzying new heights of hyperbole. People are naturally excited because it’s Tarantino, the director responsible for such cult and mainstream hits as Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill Vols. 1 and 2, and most recently, Inglourious Basterds. Racebending: When Will Hollywood Stop the Madness?

From West Side Story to The Prince of Persia, there has been a long tradition in Hollywood of casting white actors in roles intended for people of color. In an industry where minorities don’t get enough good roles as it is, it’s always a little disconcerting for me to watch California-born Natalie Wood play a Puerto Rican immigrant, or peep Mickey Rooney with taped back eye-lids hamming it up in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. It would be nice to think that…

Afro-punk reaches Chicago to spread the word

AUG.28.2010: After three big promo events to get more New Yorkers aware of youth homelessness, some of the Afro-punk staff set off to Chicago to continue our volunteer campaign. The next volunteer registration event was at Beauty Bar, hosted by one of our favorite rappers, Hollywood Holt. It was also Hollywood's mix tape release party, so we knew it would be a night of positive fun, madness, and good…
