Prince's new single is a duet with Ledisi. The track, wgich we assume is from Prince's upcoming album Plectrum Electrum (due out this year), was only posted on his 3rdeyegirl.com website for purchase, without a chance to stream it first. A bold move in this day and age. Obviously it ended up online. Check out the stream SoulCulture posted …

Wishing a speedy to Sharon Jones who has been diagnosed with bile duct cancer. Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings have therefore postponed their upcoming tour and album release. Their camp say: "It is expected that the immediate proposed surgical solution will lead to a full recovery, but because of its invasive and complex nature, will necessitate a rather lengthy convalescence." Below is the statement Sharon Jones released: "“Over the last few weeks I haven’t felt good and I…

Stephen Bruner AKA Thundercat made his name as a bass player with some of music's biggest names. After playing with everyone from Erykah Badu to Suicidal Tendencies to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers to Snoop Dogg, Thundercat set off on his own in 2011 with his solo album Golden Age of Apocalpyse. With producer Flying Lotus returning behind the desk, he’s back with the sequel. Apocalypse (coming out June 4th) is a sexy, atmospheric album with Flying Lotus' trademark…

I was laid up in a hospital bed hooked up to a morphine drip the first time I ever heard Death Grips. Though Exmilitary has maintained a regular position on my playlist, it's taken a year and a half for someone to match that feeling of exhilaration, confusion, and total sensory overload. Brooklyn's…

About 15 minutes ago I came out to my parents. “So you're bi? Whatever. Bill, do you care? [mumbles something I couldn't hear over the phone] No, your father doesn't care either.” It was actually pretty disappointing how anti-climactic it was. But the general endorphin high of getting something off my chest that I've been putting off for embarrassingly long is making the queercore (they also call themselves “homopop”) of Aye Nako's debut sound especially awesome right now. Or…

Straight out of Botswana comes some of the most ferocious death metal you'll hear in 2013. Wrust formed back in 2000 when there were only a small handful of metal bands on the entire continent. Now playing the part of living legend (with singer/guitarist Stux Daemon as the sole remaining original member), Wrust just released their latest full length record Intellectual Metamorphosis.…

R&B and soul took a dark turn when synths got good enough to almost realistically replicate the sound of a full orchestra in the late 80's. A sound more or less defined by raw human emotion and lush (AKA expensive) arrangements traded a big chunk of it's human element in exchange for “sure that sounds enough like a violin and just saved us a few hundred bucks in session fees!” So it's encouraging to see the triumphant return of the orchestra in R&B. The latest in this…

It's maybe weird to call yourself a fan of a band after only hearing one track, but that's how it went with American Fangs. The first time I heard “Le Kick” on the Afropunk Vol 2 comp I was hooked. I hunted for their album. But no luck. Since 2009 they've released a few singles and an EP and a WWE theme song because why the hell not?…
